For all you VCU dental students out there, what areas in Richmond do you live? I will be attending VCU 🙂 and was wondering about what kind of housing options there are. I'm looking for a nicer place with 2+ bedrooms because of the family.

Also, is it expensive to purchase a parking permit in one of the parking garages? And are there other options of transportation besides driving to school? I've heard about the bus, but I'm not sure if that would take too long (and thus push me towards the driving option). I'm trying to find out a cost/time effective way to get there every day...

Thanks!

Congrats on coming to VCU! It seems like most family types are living out on the west side of town, ie the Short Pump area. It's about 20 min drive, so it's not that bad of a commute and the busses do run out there so you can drive or take the bus. Parking is around $200 or so a semester for the closer lots, but there are free lots that are farther away. If you have any other questions let me know. Hope that helps!!

Congrats! I also live in the West End with my little family and we really like it out here. Cost of living is a little higher than in some other parts of the city, but basically anything we need is within 3 miles, and school is about 9 miles away. There are two Park n' Ride bus stops (on Gaskins and Parham) that take you within a couple blocks of school, and for the past couple yrs student bus passes are FREE. I still end up driving a lot because I don't like relying on the bus system if I have to stay after hrs or leave a little early, and there's a free parking lot about 11 blocks from school. It's a bit of a walk, but not unbearable. Parking passes at the 8th street deck (the closest) are ~$160/semester.
