I am ecstatic! I just received an interview invite for VCU and my August scores have not even come out yet.

So for anyone that knows the area, or have interviewed there, any advice? What's the weather going to be like in mid-November? Will I be okay in a skirt suit? Plane tickets are expensive to Richmond (from San Diego at least). Any way around that?

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Congratulations. Did you already have set of scores from april? I had to retake the test again in august. Did they email you or did you just check your status page? when were you complete there and how long did it to take for them to decide on offering you an interview?
Congrats, VCU is a great school.

Congrats. I hope you enjoy your visit to Richmond - I have really enjoyed living here. Average high is 60 and low is 38 in November, and many businesspeople wear some kind of overcoat over their suits. The school is in the middle of downtown, and finding parking can be a challenge, although if you're flying in to Richmond, getting around by cab is reasonable.

You might try expanding your flight search to other area airports. Williamsburg (PHF) in particular has a discount carrier, and Norfolk (ORF) is also sometimes a reasonable deal. In those cases, though, you would probably want to rent a car, which may eat into your savings. You can also fly into the DC area, ~2 hours north, but that's a fair ways away in uncertain traffic.

Good luck!

Csv, would you mind sharing your stats?

Thanks! (to everyone so far for the encouragement and to liverotcod for the advice). I took the April MCAT and scored a 25 O (8, 8, 9)...not that great but apparently, the cut off for out of staters for VCU, or so I've heard. They emailed me to notify me that my status changed yesterday and that I needed to check my status page. Their email was in my spam folder so I'm glad I check that now. I thought I would be rejected but it turned out to be an interview offer for November.

I sent in all my stuff on 8/26. Was complete I think 9/19 and got the interview offer 10/5 so I guess they're pretty on top of it.

As for the rest of my stats, my overall GPA is 3.73 right now but it was 3.77 when I submitted my application. My science GPA was 3.80 when I submitted my AMCAS but it probably went down a tiny bit since I got an A- over the summer. It sucks when you have anything over a 3.7 at my school because anything less than an A will bring your GPA down.

As for extracurriculars, I did some clinical research in the ER, shadowing doctors at the Student Health Clinic this semester as well as volunteering at a hospice, and I work. I also did some minor stuff like holding an officer position in a club but I don't think I did anything outstanding.

I think I've listed everything. If there is any more advice, please share.

Thanks again!

out of curiosity -- what did you do your hand written essay on?

I was complete 9/19, just got my interview invite today!! 👍

I'm having trouble with flights, though. Thanks for the tips on Williamsburg and Norfolk, as it seems flights to Richmond from the west coast run a minimum of like...$550 because of lack of a saturday stay. ARGH.

I'm trying to work this all out, seeing if renting a car or getting cabs would be cheaper. Plus, they have student hosts, so that saves money.

Someone told me Richmond has the highest crime rate in the nation. Can anyone verify this? Can anyone from Richmond tell me what the city is like? i've never been to Virginia.

Quality of life in Richmond depends on where you live. There is a high murder rate, but to be perfectly frank, it's mostly drug dealers shooting other drug dealers. In my neighborhood (within the city limits, mind you), I could probably leave my door unlocked without any problem. I used to live in a more working-class neighborhood, where a drug-gang worked the corner two blocks up the street. Being A) not a competitor and B) not a customer, I rarely felt at all threatened. I was the president of the civic association and distributed flyers inviting my neighbors to help wipe out the drug dealers, but I have to admit skipping the few houses around the corner gang 😳

The city is a mixture of proud Old South (it was the capital of the Confederacy; you won't forget that while you're here) and a cultured new city.

Well, I looked up crime rates....and it's murder rate is indeed high (but as you said, it's a drug dealing thing)...but it's other crime isn't any higher than anywhere else. I guess my friends were feeding me a line.

I also looked at the population, and at approx 200,000 it seems to be a decent sized city, but not overly large.

I like the idea of old world mixing with new world, something the west coast doesn't have.

Plus, the metro area is over a million, so it has some of the amenities (good malls, restaurants, sports, etc.) that comes with high population density. Also, we're close to DC, the beach, and the mountains.

I don't mean to sound like the brochure, and in fact I'm sort of looking forward to moving back to the midwest, but that's more of a climate/close to family thing. If I get into VCU, we may well stay here.

It's good to hear how a place is, so keep being a brochure!! It's nice to have some perspective before I check the place out.

How is living expenses?

Very reasonable compared to the other places I have lived. Certainly cheaper than anywhere in CA. For example, the VCU M1 budget includes $442/month for rent. You might actually improve on this if you have roommates. It's all relative, but to me that's pretty cheap.

weather is usually "warm" in richmond (it rarely gets to be below 34F), but can be variable like weather everywhere else (e.g., there have been instances of 65-70F in the end of November -- but it'll be more likely to be 40-50F). your best bet is to check weather.com before you pack. crime really isn't much of an issue if you know the areas to live (and to avoid)... there are simply neighborhoods that people try to avoid because of the problems. overall, richmond is a pretty quiet city; despite all the hoopla they've had about rejuvenation, most out of towners tend to be surprised at how low-key richmond is. as for transportation, it depends; if you manage to find a place around the VCU academic campus or in the downtown MCV campus, then there are city buses that can take you around (at least to your interview). i wouldn't count on getting cabs... richmond isn't exactly NYC, where you can hail cabs on the street (usually you have to call for them, except at the airport, where they wait outside). renting a car has its problems, most notably parking in the downtown area; it would be best if you can get a temp pass of sorts from the admissions office for the day of the interview. with flights, the problem is that richmond isn't a major hub, so prices are always high. you can try flying to a major hub (e.g., Continental to Newark, NJ to Richmond, Northwest to Detroit to Richmond), but that would take a lot of time, and you may not save much money. if you fly to DC, you can take the Amtrak to Richmond, which will cost about $50 single trip (though that will take an extra 2 hours). i've never tried Norfolk or Williamsburg, so i don't know about those.

the only advice for interviewing i can give is to keep in mind that VCU-MCV is a very humanistic school (so they want to hear that you plan on saving the world), and it's reflected in the curriculum and the admissions staff.

That's an interesting tip. I hadn't heard that. If I can manage to get an interview <crosses fingers> I'll surely keep that in mind. Thanks!

I was impressed with VCU during my interview. Both of the tour guides came from high pressure undergrad schools (Hopkins and Cornell) and stated how chill the student body is. The only downside of the school is the high out of state tuition rate - a whopping 38K or something.

Also, I'm not sure why everyone was talking about the city as crime infested. I didn't notice it at all when I got in the night before and explored by myself.

Wow, parking must REALLY be bad because even the school mentions it! Hrm, because I was planning on renting a car. As much of a parking vulture that I am (I commuted for three years to my undergrad, so I got good and smelling out places to park), I don't want to risk it the day of the interview.

Well, unlike my last interview, I have longer than a week to plan....so I'll start sniffing out the cheapest ways to fly and all that. I'll make sure to pass along any secrets I find out.

Thanks for the tips on Richmond! I plan on exploring the night before as well. 🙂

Not really..

I am renting a one bed apt in cali for $685(cheapest within 5-10 mile radius of school). I was told by the M2s at my interview that one bed apt at richmond also range from mid 600's to mid 800's. as far as the school budgets..you are never given enough money for your actual expenses..that might be a reason that most of us struggle hard. But you're right...having a roomate will help keeping the costs down

Wow! I wonder where they're living? I am paying $1050 mortgage on a 3 bedroom home, and my last house was $450 for a fairly large 2 bedroom. Neither within walking distance of downtown, though.

hey guys...i just got the interview invite today...I'm so psyched as I'm sure all of you are! Good luck to you all 🙂

camisho, when were you complete?
