Hey everyone! I'm sorry to start another which school would you prefer thread, but I really am confused. Ok so here's the deal. I got accepted to Wayne back in Jan and I got everything ready, aka apt, roommate, etc. Today, I just got accepted to VCU. Now I don't know what to do. I'm from cali, so I'd be OOS either way. As for tuition, with Wayne's scholarship, I'll have to pay the same amount at both schools, so money is not an issue. A lot of people I know are saying that I should pick VCU since Detroit is unsafe, but is it really that dangerous? So yea, what school would you prefer and why? Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks!😍

Detroit is not that dangerous, especially the area around WSU. Just stay out of the areas you would in any other city and you'll be fine.

I think I would pick VCU...just bc if the admissions office speaks anything for the rest of the school, they are on there ****.

Never thought I'd say this to someone from California, but pick VCU for the weather.

 So true....Richmond weather is soooooo much better than Michigan weather if you're used to California. And sure, I'm biased because I'm a VCU Med student but I think it's a better school. Plus, Detroit scares me. 😳

Wow, that is a tough choice. I say go to _ _ _.
Fill in the blanks yourself. WSU or VCU...

Detroit is really no worse than Richmond. I grew up in Detroit but I lived in Norfolk (about an hour and a half from Richmond) and the same rules applied in both cities...know your surroundings, don't wander places that you are unfamiliar with and just have some common sense. Detroit has a bad rep but my friend and I ride our bikes to Wayne state (to work) every day and we are still alive! 😉

I say go where you feel like you are going to be the happiest for the next four years. Richmond has nice weather and the beach is not too far away! Detroit has great culture. I think you just need to pick the school works out best for you!

If for no reason other than weather, VCU/Richmond wins easily.

Winters in Detroit are grim, cold, and weary. Winter starts in November and can last until April...

Richmond gets very little snow/ice, and there will be plenty of days in Dec/Jan/Feb in the 70s...

Good luck.

Make no mistake - Richmond is just as ghetto as Detroit. It's just much smaller. And because Detroit is so much bigger it has a lot more to do and a lot more culture. I'd go with Wayne.

I think VCU is a better school in terms of quality and rankings- which arent always the same.

As other have said, Richmond is not exactly the safest city in the US and is usually ranked up in the most dangerous cities in the US (usually behind detroit) so dont use that as a metric since both cities are relatively dangerous. Detroit is ranked #2, Richmond Va is ranked #15. I find it amusing that Richmond, Va and Richmond, Ca are ranked right near each other at 15 and 11

Richmond has nicer weather but less to do than detroit.
Richmond is closer to the beach
In Richmond you dont have to deal with as many Canadians
Detroit has more sports teams
Tuition is not an issue since both are the same.

You already have a roommate and plans set up in detroit so that may weigh in on the issue.

Where would you be happier?

I would go with VCU but Im kinda biased as you can see. Its a better school from what I understand. I've never heard anything good about Wayne State but I have heard some negative stories.

I'd have to lean with VCU on this one. I think VCU-Hospital is better funded so it probably has better facilities than Wayne State. I know VCU has great teaching and is great prep for the boards since they have the Costanzo. Richmond isn't terrible...much better weather...close to DC where anyone can seek refuge.

Isn't it like the 8th largest in the nation?

I live about 40 minutes from Detroit. I go down there very often for music/art/etc. activities and have visited WSU several times - I've never had any problems.

Don't go looking for trouble, use common sense, and be aware of your surroundings, and you should be fine.

I am also a little biased, but Wayne has a great curriculum, and the clinical experience is (from what I hear) awesome. The hospitals in the metro Detroit area love hiring Wayne state grads (in-fact at Beaumont Hospital they prefer Wayne grad to U of M grads!!) I really think you just need to spend some time looking at each school and the curriculums and just pick where you will be happiest! Good luck!

I havent researched VCU, but I at one point was holding an acceptance to WSU and I really liked it. The class size is big, but there is alot to do in Detriot (pro hockey, bball, baseball, the symphony, etc), so as long as you dont mind the winters, go there. Detriot medical center has 7 hospitals in a 3 block radius, so clinically it is great. WHat about vcu?

If I may ask, what's the beef on Canadians?

in terms of the quality of the medical school itself, which one would you guys go to? (with less of an emphasis on the location, weather, etc. and more emphasis on the actualy medical school experience)

im sure the OP already made his decision, but i just got into WSU, and VCU is one of my top choices, so if i get the opportunity of choosing between the two id like to know all i can!
