These are two types of passages that I consistently score low on. Has anyone out there been in a similar situation and wound up significantly raising their scores on these types of passages? Just wondering, what kind of observations towards improving your performance did you make that helped you with these type of passages?

I consistently had a lower score in Verbal in the passage types you mentioned. But keep this in mind. If it's just these two passages you score low in, then it's probably not your verbal ability but more so your interest in what you are reading. I found out I was the same way. I always thought my verbal was terrible but it was mostly just because lack of interest for humanities, history, art, etc. So here's what I did. Completely change your attitude and approach. Before you read a passage, take 5 seconds, look away, and breathe. When those 5 seconds are over, turn your head, get excited, and try as hard as possible to be interested. Try to keep an open mind about what you're reading. Try to be as interested as possible. After a while, you'll trick yourself and you actually will be interested. As you read, think about why it's interesting, think about who would care about it, and ask yourself questions like "I wonder why the author thinks this way about that." Be engaged and interested, and you'll be able to improve. For me, 80% of my verbal ability was dependent on my attitude.
