My AMCAS application just got verified, and my verified cGPA/sGPA is lower than what I had calculated myself.
  • Calculated: 3.41/3.46
  • Verified: 3.38/3.42
I decided on my school list based on the higher, self-calculated GPA. How much does having a 3.38/3.42 hurt me compared to having a 3.41/3.46? Is this difference in GPA trivial? Or does the difference in GPA mean that I might not even get into an MD school? I can't stop thinking about how this will affect me, as I really thought I would at least get past the 3.4 mark for my cGPA. Will schools screen me out due to my GPA being under 3.4? How will 3.38/3.42 vs. 3.41/3.46 affect my application?

My MCAT is 35, btw, so it shouldn't sway my low GPA either way. Assume average ECs, LORs, etc.

🙁

Why do these GPA discrepancies keep occurring? Did you calculate it correctly? What scale did you use?

To answer your question, I don't think it will make a huge difference.

thats a great MCAT score and will not make up for your GPA but will certainly give you a second look . Keep your chin up!!

I had a 3.39/3.23, 30 MCAT last cycle and got two MD interviews; one OOS. Don't worry too much. Just stay proactive and take time on your essays. Remember this is n=1, but its not impossible. Your mcat is much better than mine.

It's so trivial. A 0.03-0.04 is not going to break you. Likely, both the submitted and verified are in the same "GPA bin". Likely higher than any GPA cutoffs I've seen as well...

Do you live in a lucky state?
Have a strong upward trend?
Realize that a 35 MCAT is nothing to sneeze at?

The reason my calculation was wrong was that I did a few semesters of postbacc work at an institution different from my undergrad. My undergrad uses credit units (1 lecture class = 1 credit unit, 1 lab = .5 credit units, etc.), while my postbacc institution uses semester hours (1 lecture class = 3 semester units, 1 lab = 2 semester units, etc.). I converted one credit unit to 3 semester units, but AMCAS converted one credit unit to 4 semester units. This is why there was a discrepancy.

Is this considered an upward trend?:

Freshman: 3.20, 36.00 Hours
Sophomore: 3.38, 34.00 Hours
Junior: 2.96, 34.00 Hours
Senior: 3.63, 28.00 Hours
Postbaccalaureate Undergrad: 4.00, 23.00 Hours

How would your list even change with this new info? That's a minuscule difference.

The two solid last years are a good sign.

Thanks, Goro! The only school I don't have from your list is Emory, though with 37 MD schools plus 6 DO schools, I probably won't add it at this point.

Tiny difference and you can't do anything about it at this point anyway. Don't worry about it. Do your best to present yourself as a strong candidate. Good luck.
