Verizon iPhone 4 or Droid X

although I'm not sure how starting medschool correlates with a new phone, but being an iPhone user myself I would recommend the iPhone.

Well lets see... I'm getting a new phone and figured I would investigate which one would benefit me more. I'm currently using a non-smartphone model...

I don't have much experience with the iphone 4, but every motorola Droid I have seen, including the X, has been nothing but problems. I have the HTC Incredible and absolutely love it.

yeah, I would go with the iPhone then (verizon though not ATT), especially since Verizon has the unlimited data offer currently.

Try out both operating systems and see which one you like best. I have an iPhone 4 that I'm really happy with it, but Android phones are pretty nice too.

Oh yeah, in before this thread becomes some huge flamewar between mac fan boys and android fan boys 🙄

Starting med school this Fall. Should I get the Verizon iPhone 4 or the Verizon Droid X?

I have the original moto droid. Used to love it, but now I can't stand it. Go with the iPhone. I can't wait until I have an upgrade available.

The verizon iPhone 4 looks nice. I know the comparison is between Droid X and Verizon iPhone, but I will say that the ATT iPhone you're only allowed 2GB data for 25 bucks. Verizon gives you 30 bucks unlimited data plus you have mobile wifi hotspot. Not sure if Droid X has that, but as an avid iTunes user, it's just convenient to use the iPhone.

If you are getting a new phone no matter what then I'd say iPhone.

Only exceptions would be if you are more a tech/gadget junky and enjoy really tweaking & customizing your phone and don't care about access to the iTunes "universe" then android may be the better option.

If you are already moderately invested in iTunes content and what seamless access to that stuff as well as a touchscreen interface that's second to none in my opinion and don't doing things "Apple's way" then you'd be happy with the iPhone. And there's always possibility if jailbreak if you want to get a little edgy with your phone. But I'm more than happy with mine and there's really nothing the android ones offer feature wise that I miss on the iPhone. Nthe camera is terrific, browser is one of the best one a mobile device, I already use iTunes for music and podcasts, etc...

Now, if you just getting a new phone for med school I'd say maybe wait a year or two if you can since there's nothing you need them for during first two years anyway. You can save some money and wait for the newer models by the time you start clinicals.

But if you have the money and/or going to get one no matter what then go nuts and enjoy. 🙂

Are you kidding?! Droids are scary. I will never use a phone that scares the **** outta me with its creepy low robotic "dddrroooiiiddd" voice. Anybody else see the similarity?

Neither. Wait until summer. You're likely to see the iPhone 5 and some new Droid phones with hardware specs that are incredible.

Neither. Get an HTC incredible or save the money and buy yourself a bitchin' laptop.

DO NOT GET THE VERIZON IPHONE 4... At least the original release. It is a nerfed version. You can't do data and voice at the same time which is huge, and I'm surprised more reviews don't stress this. Plus, it is not 4g compatible and cannot be upgraded to 4g. Wait until the next version comes out or get a droid. I love my evo, but I think iphones are better for med students due to some of the available apps. But the verizon iphone is outdated technology that should be ignored by most consumers (but won't be) imho.

"When you get a phone call while using data on a CDMA phone right now, that phone call interrupts the data connection. Likewise, you need to hang up voice calls before trying to bring up websites or capture other data. Want to use that built-in tethering app to send a 3G signal to five devices? Just don't try to talk on the phone at the same time."

Outdated technology? Really the only thing it's lacking is LTE/4G, and that just came out. The no simultaneous data & voice issue is a limitation of verizon's evdo/CDMA network and not because this iPhone is a "nerfed version". Verizon's other phones (with exception of ones that support 4G) have the same limitation.

I agree with the others though in that at least wait until summer to see what sort of specs iPhone 5 and the new androids will have.

Gonna settle this nice and simple. If you must get a new verizon phone and cannot wait until november 2011 (iPhone 5) or early 2012 (iPhone 5 4g), THEN GET THE DAMN DROID.

Droids currently sold on verizon are all 4G ready and will be running MUCH faster than the iPhone once 4G goes up in the next few weeks. We've already done multiple speed tests of a T-mobile 4G android phone against the iPhone. The 4G is literally 3x faster. takes about 6 seconds without fail to load a page like espn on 4G androids and about 20-22 to open fully with all images on iphone. Sometimes (but not often) even longer.

Apple has said the new iPhone 5 wont be 4G when it is first released at the dn of this year, but already plan to integrate 4G at the start of 2012. They've been known to mislead us before and unveil phones months ahead of time. But this is also Mac. A company that will not put anything in any of their products unless it has been proven to be 'market-safe' for years. Then they will adopt it and make it unbelievably mainstream and take credit for 'revolutionizing' something that has been out there for years. Which plays into the "they might actually wait til 2012"

With nerfed version, I meant it for the lack of 4g/LTE capability, not the CDMA issue. 4G is going to be the standard, I'd say within a year, and this phone doesn't have that ability. Most people sign contracts for two years, so it seems pretty silly, or dare I say outdated, for a brand new top of the line smartphone to not include a 4g connection 🙂

There are going to be a lot of unhappy verizon iPhone users in a year when all their friends are using 4g and they are stuck with 3g.

the only issue with 4G is that you would go through your 2 gig (since I doubt they will offer unlimited 4G when it comes out) in a couple of days.

Oh I agree. And like was mentioned above it doesn't look iPhone 5 will have 4G out of the gate as well. Apple is definitely not on the bleeding edge in regards to integrating new technologies.

But really, we've done fine with 3G speeds for quite a while now and unless you plan on doing a bunch of video calling or streaming then I don't think it's a huge issue for most users.

I'm still on AT&T and really have no problems with the network here in Florida and enjoy decent speeds so I'm not itching to change providers anytime soon. If anything I'd be more interested in getting a verizon 4G wireless hotspur when they come out.

I got my wife the iPhone4 and I was worried I would like it more than my Droid incredible. After playing around with it for the past few days I can honestly say I like my phone a lot more. In the end though I would have to say get the iPhone just because of available apps. One day the Android market place will catch up, but for now more is available on the iPhone.

Rumor has it that verizon 4g will be no extra charge (unlimited data)
for the first few months (as it is only available in 38 cities and aren't likely to charge extra on a national scale yet.). Wait a few more weeks and think about getting an htc thunderbolt at bestbuy , they will are buying phones back for 50% retail if you want the new iPhone this summer (that will cover most of the new iPhone). Plus then you could get grandfathered into the "free" 4g plan. My insiders at verizon tell me the details for 4g will be out at the end of feb.

when the next iPhone comes out and if Verizon offers unlimited 4G plan I will immediately cancel my at&t plan and switch over.

iPhone. I have an HTC Incredible, and while I like it alright, I prefer the iPhone. If you have a Mac notebook, the Droids are a pain in the ass to sync.

I need everyone to know that verizon is offering its unlimited data plan for the Iphone for a Limited time. I myself really wanted a HTC Incredible or Iphone but now I think I'll just wait for the HTC Thunderbolt.

Yeah I've got a macbook pro so I'm looking at going with the iPhone 4. I don't really care about 4G. If I could just use my iphone 3G from ATT i would. I'm just wanting to go with verizon.

But as long as you sign up for it now, they won't force you into a capped plan when it changes.

I've got a Droid 2 and I like it a lot. I much prefer physical keyboards so this was by far the best option from Verizon.

Get the Droid Bionic! It comes out pretty soon, this month?

The bionic comes out Q2, so probably April or May.

The new Iphone is suppose to be coming out in June, so I would wait, and you don't really need a smart phone until your 3rd/4th year. Androids, however, are technically better phones but they arn't as cool.

1) HTC Evo
2) Iphone (only if jailbroken)

3) Droid X

I highly doubt 4G is the standard within the year. Most evidence is pointing to 2013 as for when it is covering every major U.S city. I agree that they really should use 4G in the new iphone. I've used 4g on my evo and it's significantly faster. (Although it drains your battery faster as well).

Aren't as cool?😕
I've seen a few people say you don't *need* a smart phone until 3rd, 4th year. Who cares if you dont *need* it. They're awesome.

If you know how to jailbreak, and utilize it's features, I would get the iphone (iphone 5 when it comes out). It's works seamlessly with iTunes and there are some really interesting and useful medical apps that aren't found on android (yet?).

I'm saying this as someone who has an android phone (and loves it). The truth is I love my phone because I was able to flash a ROM and really customize it the way I would like. If I couldn't do that, I may have went with the iphone instead.

Two things I forgot to mention,

You can use wifi and talk on the phone over Verizon's network, so it is possible to surf the web and talk on the phone. (still not that great though)
I have an ipod and just use a wireless tether hack to have the best of both worlds. This does mean you have to carry both though. (Just another idea)

All I will say is that I am very pleased with my Droid X. I would recommend it.

All Verizon Droid phones are not 4G. Droid X, Droid Pro, Droid 2, Droid Incredible all are not 4G capable.

I cant speak on the droid x or droid pro. But the other two have the ability to turn on 4G. Its in the phone. Everyone assumes if the option to turn it on is there for anyone whos gone through the menus fully and the "hardware" is there according to people who've hacked the phone.

the caveat is that there is zero word from google, motorola or verizon as to this being functional. but why have it in the phones hardware and menus if there is no software available to utilize it. especially when its open source operating system.

admittedly, they could have built it with the hopes that 4G would come soon and the 4G compatability might not actually work at all and only be a relic of an attempt to pre-set it to a theoretical 4G network that may not be what verizon now uses. No one is sure until there is a 4G network to try it on.

I've got a droid x and really like it. Would I like it better than an iPhone, im not sure, but I agree with some of the above posters that you should wait for the iPhone 5 this summer. You know there will be tons of issues with the new iphone users on verizon right away.

I have had a smartphone all through school so far, and it really hasn't been more beneficial than if I had a regular phone. Sure it is nice to sync your emails and calender, but I spend so much time on the computer it isnt all that necessary.

They do not have the ability to use 4G. Merely having a toggle to turn on or off 4G is in the operating system, not the hardware of the phone. The hardware is not capable of connecting to a 4G signal. I could easily create a toggle for an iphone to turn on 4G. It does not mean that it's capable of running it. Verizon 4G LTE is Sim card based. None of those phones use a sim card and are capable of running 4G.

I reread that and it didn't seem clear.

For every Droid phone available from Verizon right now, there is not a single phone capable of using verizon's 4G LTE network. To use this network a "4G" radio must be physically present on the hardware of the phone. None of these phones contain this hardware. The FCC tightly regulates the hardware on these phones, and all of these phones went through the FCC stating they did NOT have the 4G radio. Lying to the FCC is illegal, there would be no reason to "hide" the hardware. I've taken every single one of these phones apart and have yet to see the hardware. Since Android O.S is open source you're going to see a few kinks that don't belong on certain phones. In this case, there was a hidden option to "enable" 4G. I hope that clarifies everything.

Hey all. You all sound very tech savvy. Which company offers GSM technology (eg ability to talk and surf). I know at&t does but their phone selection sucks. Does anyone know any other company that does not use CDMA?

thanks

But you can talk and surf at the same time on verizon if you have a 4G phone and are in a 4G area from what I understand, but would not be able to with the current iPhone 4. And from what I've heard, this limitation of CDMA is with the current "version" of the technology and so should be able to be fixed in newer iterations.

This is mostly right, but I believe not all of Verizon's initial line of 4G will be able to support this feature. I'm not sure if it's finalized yet as their go-to method for offering both data and phone simultaneously, but Verizon plans on using phones with two radios, a 4G radio and an older CDMA radio. They plan on using the 4G radio for your data connection (where it is most useful) and their older CDMA for talk. It seems like a good method to me, but they need their phone creators to cooperate and make phones that support both radios. Most of this information I've picked up from forums and tech blogs, so I can't say definitively that this will be their method, but it makes the most sense. The CDMA network uses one line for both data and talk, which is why you can't do both simultaneously. You can always circumvent that by using Wifi if you wanted. I know back home the cable companies are adding Wifi down major roads and are extending their networks daily, so it really could be a viable option if needed.

thanks for your contributions guys. If t mobile is a gsm company then why does it carry cdma phones? I'm pretty sure their blackberrys are cdma. Also, while that 4G/cdma thing is really nice, I think I am the only person who does not care much for 4G. It just drains the battery life of the phone. Even when you are not connected to the internet, isn't it constantly trying to find a 4G connection?

You guys all know that this 4G talk is a bunch of rubbish right? These networks are NOT capable of 4G speeds, yet many speak of it as if it were some definite truth. HAH! It's all PR juice to the fullest.

Do a few quick searches and you will speak of 4G no more... at least not until it is REALLY available. By the time it is, these phones you speak of will be yesterdays' toast. I highly suggest listening to the NPR program posted below. It was aired a few weeks ago on Science Friday.

All android phones have toggles (I'm sure non android phones have settings to turn of 4G as well), so you can place a 4G toggle on one of you screens. You can leave it off when you want, or you can tap it to turn it on (takes maybe 3 seconds or less) and then tap to turn it off. There are also programs like juice defender (which I highly recommend) that gives you more control over when your connections are on. For example, if you have juice defender enabled it will turn off all of your internet connections while your screen is off, and in intervals you set, will turn on the internet, sync everything, then turn it back off. Saves me a significant amount of battery life. So to answer your question, if you leave it on, then yes it will stay connected, but it's very easy to turn off and manage.

This has been well known and documented for a while now. 90% of people using the 4G networks have no idea what specific speeds they should be reaching, the point is that the 4G out now is significantly faster than 3G. What would you like to call it, 3G+++. Sure, why not. Point is, with 3G+++ you will be getting better speeds. By the time the "real" 4G phones are out every phone out now will be "toast". Then 5G will come and 4G phones will be "toast". If you want to try and keep up with technology and wait for the newest item, good luck, it will be an expensive endeavor. The next best thing will always be on the horizon.

Neither. Wait until summer. You're likely to see the iPhone 5 and some new Droid phones with hardware specs that are incredible.

nooo, just wait to iphone6... due with quantum computing specs.
