Very Happy with my choice: NYU

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For crying out loud! While you talk it up with all your patients I'll work my a#% off and make 3x's more money than you. Go ahead and have fun with your finance calculator (I'm dumb and I'm idiot because I don't know the worth of 60 grand.....good thing I got through all those easy science classes) and never understand who I was really targeting. That being people who say NYU is a bad choice over another another private school that are a good 5-15 grand cheaper/year. Yes, I understand that UOP and a handful of schools are at least 60 grand cheaper. But, I also understand that you can pay that off with hard work in 2 or 3 years if you really have the determination. Now, go ahead and make some stupid comment me calling everybody else idiots or stupid when I've been aiming that at you the whole time. You had to make the initial ridiculous comment about me giving you the 60 grand in the first place. BTW, Mr. Shell I plan on joining the military so your route is not my route. I'm just making the argument that 60 grand isn't that much.....or maybe it's because I see the big picture. That being a job I love that is my "calling" and I will be successful and quite loaded in the latter end of my life....just like you Mr. UOP grad.
I wonder if this person realizes that nobody else has agreed with the point that 60k is nothing.

Nope, just trying to tell you that since you got into UOP you are a pompous a%#. Thats it. You win Mr. Bigshot. Some people care about their dental school experience and quantify the experience more than tuition spent and money saved in the long run. Enjoy your bank roll and shi#$* attitude.

Why don't you tell the guy going to Pacific all about a good "dental school experience."

And epic lulz at you saying I have a bad attitude.

You win there Mr. Shell. I have nothing more to say about my $60,000 blunder. I'm going to be the shizziest broke a@# dentist out there cuz of my ignorant foolish decision. Please don't reply I swear I'm not trying to get the last word even though I'm posting last. I'm just trying to tell you that you've exhausted all of the substance to my measly thought. Congrats to you. I still love ya though Mr. Shell....it's been fun.

That's all you got from this whole bash fest????????????? 😕😕😕😕😕😕😕😕😕😕
60 grand is nothing in the context I'm speaking in.....
Gosh....I love forums but freak! Read before you comment.

You clearly haven't read anything I've said. Maybe re-read a few of my replies in this thread if you can see them from up there on your high horse.

I'm pretty low bud. You win. Good job. I love ya Mr. Shell. 😍

Ohh my God, maybe SDN needs to strictly enforce that 16 years + policy.

To stud, I'm an NYU student and yes 60,000 is a lot of money. Many people commute to minimize their loans by a few tens of thousand. BUT, in YOUR case, (i.e., the military route) it makes sense for you to pick the school/area you like best, rather than take money into consideration. Hey, if you got the money (some people on sdn and a lot of people in d-school) then go ahead and spend it, but I would choose to spend as less as possible in d-school, as I will have to pay it all back (and more) later on. I am a believer in the every little bit helps philosophy. I'm not talking about skimping on fries to save .99. I'm taking about tens of thousands. 20,000 is a car or a downpayment on something in the future.

To Armor, I think you missed the part where he said he's taking the military route, so it'll be the other way around: You will be paying back your debt while he will be cashing in those checks (in a military uniform).

In conclusion: YES, NYU is a great school, but YES it is expensive and has big classes. other than a few other minor complaints which all d-school students have, its a great school. Not nearly as bad as the reputation it receives on SDN.

I think this thread just blew up because some members on sdn can't resist from making wise-*** comments at every chance they get. If we all made our points without the attitude, we'd have fewer bull**** on the forum.

I didn't miss anything. I know this guys on the military plan, and that's fantastic. That doesn't change the argument at all however. I was arguing with his point of view about the relative worth of a big pile of cash, not his situation.

And yes, people on the internet make wise-*** comments, usually because they are funny. If you got rid of all that, SDN would have one thread called "What are my chances" and would be more boring than Antarctica.

Don't forget the thread "how much salary does a ......."

Oh, and I wish I had an extra 350-400 dollars a month in positive cash flow. Thats a boat or new car payment.

Hey, since it doesn't really matter to you, can I borrow $60,000?

Wise comment????? NO......never would I have thought that! Wait a minute, that is exactly what started this.
Love ya Mr. Shell 😍

Bwhahahahahaha. Were you picked on as a kid? Did you try to get in with the cool group and they all picked on you? Or are you just 4 ft tall? The more you talk, the more people realize how silly you are. Go ahead and work 3x's as hard, and the smart dentists will work 1/3 as hard as you, but due to the smart choices we have made with our money, retire just as well off as you. It is always fun to watch the fly that keeps hitting the glass plane, when a foot to the right, the window is wide open.

I can't lose can i a#$ 2. I'm 6'5" just so you know. And i guess I'm no longer a 16 year old....I'm now in elementary school ,getting beat up, and definitely haven't learned the value of 60 grand and especially how interest works. you antagonize like no other big guy. enjoy your brains, intelligence, height, great directional skills in front of windows and especially your ability to enter into fights that don't include you. P.S. 3x's more work = 3x's more money.....duh....just learned that last week in class (way to pervert my words AND join the cool group with Mr. Shell)

just so you know A#$, I don't feel comfortable calling you by any other name, you have no clue how smart i am or my past history so don't go there. this has to due with our interpretation of 60 grand. you may feel comfortable not going into that debt, great! you may save it and pay for your benz, great! you can do alot of things with that money...don't care!

let me repeat what I said for you a@# 2, and a@# 1 (Mr. Shell)....60 grand isn't that much more than other private schools. If you can get into a school that has that additional cost then good for you because in twenty years you'll be bankrolling just like any other student from UOP or wherever you're going a@# 2. If you get into a cheaper private school (Not NYU because they are the most expensive "stupidest" school to get into.....LAME) then good for you.

Enjoy your extra cash flow a@#es while I go to NYU. All three of will be wealthy in the future. YES, EVERY DENTIST WHO WORKS HARD WILL BE QUITE WELL OFF. YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO TO A STATE SCHOOL OR CHEAPER PRIVATE SCHOOL TO HAVE THAT OPPORTUNITY TO EXCEL IN DENTISTRY.

OK. NOW PICK ONE THING OUT OF ALL THAT I SAID AND SPIN IT.

Love ya a@# 1 & 2,
Sincerely,

Thank you for at least using a little common sense. Sure NYU is expensive but hell, almost all of the private schools are ridic! Just because you grab a 10 or 20 grand discount yearly from another private school like Tufts or ASDOH doesn't make the 300 large you'll be in debt drastically less than the 360,000 you'll end up with at NYU. For you fools out there that will gnash their teeth about 60 grand...please! That'll effect your repayment about 300 bucks...no big. IF you can get into a cheaper state school then do so.......but obviously every private school doesn't struggle to put butts in their seats.

If you read my wording a@# 1 then you would see that I support the idea of choosing a cheaper school (such as UOP) if you get in. I simply stated that it won't matter all that much in the end. Large savings or a quarter monthly payment of that BMW doesn't make the NYU, USC, etc. grad idiots, stupid, silly, ignorant of money, beat up or any other thing you can think up.

One more post.

:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

This is fun guys. I've increased my post/day from 0.47 to 0.57!

i agree with this post. There are always other factors besides money that drive people to one school or another. Just because someone goes to the more expensive school does not make one ignorant of money.

since whe did UoP become cheaper than NYU? cost of living in SF is also pretty high, although you get to pay 1 yr less worth of living costs.

I never at any point claimed that going to NYU made anyone ignorant of money or any such thing. If you look at the previous page I said the exact opposite. std is just a crazy rant machine.

UoP is roughly 60-70k cheaper than NYU considering average total cost, not including scholarships.

I showed earlier that it will make a significant difference, to the tune of halves of millions of dollars. What you can't seem to understand is that it only makes sense to choose a cheaper school from a purely financial perspective, which is what I've been saying THE WHOLE TIME. Choose your school for whatever reason you damn please.

Never said NYU grads were idiots, stupid or silly either. There's been a family member of mine at NYU dental since before it was called NYU. Of course, that tradition ends with me

You rock dude. This has been a rant fest in a half but I don't hold no grudge against you. UOP rocks because of the 3 year/ 60k less advantage and we both know it.

Love ya Mr. Shell

i want accusing you directly mr. shell. Just talking in general.

It is unfortunate that this thread took a dump when Mackchops was just trying to reassure those planning on attending NYU that even though the price tag is steep, there are many things that the NYU incoming class has to look forward to. Hopefully Mac starts another thread that is geared towards NYU Q&A instead of finances since it is such a touchy topic.

Sometimes I feel those bickering about the huge price tag of NYU are just pissed because they want to go there but can't afford it or don't want to pay it. Those defending the NYU price tag are those that are nervous about going into that much debt and are just trying to reassure themselves.

I think $60k is a tremendous amount of money and it can add up as armorshell has pointed out. In the end it just depends. Money is not everything. You could die of cancer at 50. You could be filthy rich but be miserable. Or you could be $60k behind at the end of dental school and be $500k ahead 10 years later if you are confident in your abilities and incorporate some of the perks of NYU (i.e. Invisalign training) into your practice. Pay it or don't pay it. If you don't pay it, don't criticize others for choosing to do so. If you do pay it, realize you have your work cut out for you and others will resent you (or pity you) for choosing to attend NYU.

Cheers,

Bob

Right on the nail head. Well said. Glad you were able to place an appropriate period on the topic....until it comes up again. Thanks! 👍

The rumors have nothing to do with class size or the cost. It is when you start your GPR and wonder why people from other schools are looking at you and wondering if you even went to dental school.😕

It's funny that some recent NYU grads say the same thing about the people in their GPR programs. You can't generalize an entire school based on the performance of a handful of individuals and you certainly cannot rate a school by what anonymous, uninformed people are posting on the internet.

These discussions are always hilarious. Fact of the matter is that they are too frequent and too numerous to even care about. If you trust what anyone on here says about schools they don't/didn't attend, you are foolish. If you take advantage of the opportunities available at any school, you will be successful. If you do just enough to skate by, "people from other schools may look at you and wonder if you even went to dental school."

I may be jaded though because I'm only a D1 at NYU and I'm HPSP, but I like what I've EXPERIENCED, what I've SEEN, and what I've HEARD directly from upper classmen...it's quite different then what people think they've seen or heard and then posted on SDN.

If I got into my state school, I would've gone there, it would've been foolish not to. Since I didn't, I don't regret coming to NYUCD at all.

There is a a limit when the potential income of a DDS does not offset the cost of tuition. I think NYU is getting close to that limit. I know students that went to NYU for dental school and post grad. Their student loans will be 3500$ per month for a couple of decades. That is not easy to pay back.
