Doesn't that sound like something vet related?

I'm thinking about getting one for next year, to drive to school (obvi!) and was wondering if anyone had any experience, thoughts, advice.

How much are they usually? What kind of brands are there (besides vespa)? Is one better than the other?

How cold does it have to be before you use something else?

And, of course, any funny anecdotes are great too!

Lol, vespa can be vet related...it's Italian for "wasp"! Wasps are animals, too!

I did not know that. See what we learn when we all share 😀

I was wondering the same things after seeing several people using them at WI last weekend. They seem so convenient, but I was wondering how much use I would get out of it since winter is most of the school year.

What are you looking to know? They are my other hobby besides vw's.

I have a 1979 vespa scooter I ride. A 1964 vespa I will restore some day and an early 80's vespa moped I really have no good explanation for why I own....

Funny stories? Last year the mob boss from The Sopranos crashed his vespa in NYC riding around.

I guess mostly how useful ARE they? I have no problem bundling up in a parka to ride to school, but like ... do they get okay gas mileage? Do they even USE gas? Are they easy to pick up (and thus steal?) How do you stop that from happening?

Is a used one okay? Should I take it to a mechanic to make sure its not a lemon? Do they even HAVE mechanics? What's a reasonable price? Things of that nature ....

Ive had a Yamaha Zuma for all my undergraduate school. I live relatively close to campus so never had to worry about driving on roads more than 30 mph and it was really enjoyable to own. Made getting to class a lot easier. Costs me under 2 bucks to fill a tank and it lasts for a few weeks. All positive!

Madison has more mopeds per capita than any other city, so my friend said, so people must be able to deal with it. She said they taper off in Jan./Feb. but reappear once it gets warm.

There are other moped brands besides Vespas, but they are by far the most stylish, I mean they're Italian! I personally would buy new because I don't know squat about them and their repair but I would suspect that there are good mechanics in Mad City considering the numbers of mopeds.

Good call fargeese -- so instead of studying for my test or writing my thesis (due in two days -- then I PROMISE no more talk about it) I'm checking SDN and looking at scooters online.

I make good life decisions!

First off, there are 2 types of scooters out there. There are smaller scooters with 50cc motors, can do roughly 30 mph and can be legally registered as mopeds. They dont require a motorcycle license or insurance.

Then there are larger scooters which can do upwards of 70 mph, have larger motors (150cc+), but require a separate motorcycle license and insurance.

Unless what you see people riding have license plates they are probabily the former. In either case they are a lot of fun to ride and can be quite practical. If you have a short commute around town, the smaller 50cc ones could be fine, but if you are looking to cruise at 40-50 mph, you will need something bigger.

Fuel economy. My older one gets me upper 50's for fuel economy. The newer ones should get you in the 60's for something with a bigger motor and in the 70's for something with a smaller one.

Weather wise the coldest I have ridden mine was down in the 40s.... but its really cold around that point. 40's arnt bad, but you essentially have a 40-50 mph wind chill to contend with. If you are hoping to ride to class in a sweatshirt then you are looking at days in the 60's.

Price wise. Vespa is just a single brand. New you are looking at around $3000 for a 50cc one that can be registered as a moped, $4000+ for something new. There are other reputable brands like Kymoco and Genuine are also very reputable brands with slightly lower price tags. Used is definitely an option. Scooter are fairly simple, so if everything appears to work fine, it probabily is fine. Yamaha and Honda also sell scootes are are brands I would definitely trust.

Theft. They weigh anywhere from 200-250 lbs which makes them pretty easy to steal. If you have a moped legal scooter, you shouldnt have an issue just parking them on a sidewalk and chaining them to whatever is around. On campus, just chain it up to a bike rack. If you have a larger one registered as a motorcycle, then you will be pretty limited to conventional parking. In which case I would just make sure your insurance covers theft. If someone were to steal mine, my insurance will cut me a check and I will find myself another one.

Mechanics. They are out there and they tend to work for scooter shops. You might be able to find some motorsports(atv and motorcycle) shops in the area that will work on them, but its hit or miss.

My biggest recommendation would be to try and find if there is a scooter shop in your area. They will carry a variety of new and used scooters and you can check out what type of options there are.

Also, anything you can buy from an auto parts store or a used car lot with a random bunch of scooters for sale is going to be a complete headache. There are a bunch of no-name brand scooters out there sold for dirt cheap that come straight from china. There are no support networks for them, parts are impossible to get, and real scooter mechanics refuse to work on them because of these issues.

My family (me too) are HUGE honda fans (I currently drive a new cr-v -- and would keep that, but am trying to avoid the bus to school). Maybe I'll check those out --- but your comments david were GREAT!

thanks for the help!

One of my favorite scooters of all times has to be the Honda Spree. It was sold from like 1983-86. Has a little 50cc motor, can be registered as a moped and will do 25-30 mph depending on how the wind blows. Thing only weights about 90 lbs and is perfect for a person up to maybe 150 lbs. The perfect alternative if you commute is a little too long for a bike and you want something that looks like a scooter instead of a normal moped. Can find them for $300-600 in running condition.

I know its old, but if you are only looking for something small, its definitely worth looking into. In particular a red one.... they look way cooler in red.

As David said you want to get one under 50cc so you dont have to get a motorcycle license. So you want to look for one like the Zuma that has a 49 cc engine. They get great gas mileage and a few good brands are Yamaha, Honda, and Kymco. Depending on the style of kickstand you may need some strength to put it up.

The Honda Spree has an electric start. 🙂 Its really the ultimate 50cc.

ummm .... electric start? as opposed to .... ?? something like a car maybe?

(is my total non-auto-etc knowledge becoming clearer?)

All I can think of is Eddie Izzard's imitation of Italians - all riding around on mopeds going, "ciao... ciao..." Er, you had to be there.

Some dude here has a Segway. We laugh at him because we know it cost a lot, this campus isn't THAT big, and he looks like he could use the exercise as well. I see mopeds parked with the motorcycles though. It's funny... Harley, FZR, Triumph, Ducati, ... Vespa? Hah. I always wondered how they didn't get stolen. Then again, they're parked out in the open.

Electric start as opposed to... a pull cord like on a lawnmower? LOL. That would be fun.

You guys are killing me. Kick starters....

Not inappropriate, but also not something I would open at work:
Best video I can find of kickstarting something.

Ohhhhhh yeaaaaahhhhh... I knew that. I forgot about kickstarting.

Just don't kickstart it in gear, if that's possible on a moped? Seems like something I would do.

The Yamaha Zuma has an electric starter and kick starter. Very handy!

I don't think a moped is a particularly good investment in Wisconsin, personally. For instance, this year, I'm pretty sure you couldn't ride it from December 1st until now. Madison is notoriously terrible for not plowing, or not plowing well enough. I'm pretty sure there was a solid 6 inches of packed down snow on our street since winter began and you certainly can't moped on that. Even the main roads were terrible. If it's after 430p or a weekend (not a badger football game), you can park for free in the lot. A ton of my class takes the bus and doesn't seem to have any problem with it. There are a lot of buses that go past the hilldale area, so I'm assuming it wouldn't be that big of a deal to find one.

All very true -- they're just so darned cute!! 😀

Madison has bike trails that they plow in the winter. I think that's cool. I doubt you can take a moped on them, though.

I agree with Habibti, you won't be able to use it much for most of the school year. Besides, what so bad about the bus? It's free and there are a number of them that run past the Hilldale area and drop you of close to school. And you won't be the only one riding the bus. Most people at school do! Either that, or they ride their bikes, which is what I prefer to do when it's nice out. (The buses are especially nice even if you ride your bike since they all have bike racks on them... great for days were it unexpectedly starts to rain. Can't do that with a moped!)

Although, i spose if you have money to waste... go for it 😛. Otherwise, there are much cheaper and practical options for Madison.

Hi 😉

I have Vespa GT200 2006 model. It is my first scooter and I love it. It gives me great gas mileage and I can't describe how I feel when I am riding...if you can afford it, I really recommend getting a vespa. They are just beautiful. And you'll know it when you go scooter-shopping. They are other good brands as well but if you look at them with vespa side-by-side, you know what I mean. Vespa is a classic...so many famous people have owned it too. You can rent "Breakfast in Tiffany" by Audrey Hepburn and see her ride in the back of a vespa through the streets of Italy. Very lovely.
Anyhow, if you guys have a moment, would you mind casting a vote for my dog, Cody? We would love to win the contest!

thanks so much!!

I've always wanted a vespa too~ or maybe a small bike.
Has anyone seen any bikes with sidecars around anymore? Seen a few on eBay but in no condition to ride....just for collectors I suppose...

I gave yer Cody 5 bones by the way! Good luck! I wish I would've known about that contest beforehand - any other puppy pic contests you know of?

Hi Mellobunnie,

Thank you so much for your vote! (you CAN vote everyday if you can...wink wink!)

Here is another pet pic contest you can enter. The deadline is coming right up so hope you can find something and I'll sure to vote for you too!

Good luck!

BTW, although a moped isn't very practical for a decent portion of the year, if you've got the money, I'm sure it would be great to have in the summer, especially if you worked somewhere in the area or if you just wanted to head to the union (mmm... beer). It's way easier to find parking for a moped on or around campus than a car.

If you decide to get a scooter, please please PLEASE take a riding course from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (http://www.msf-usa.org/). It will teach you invaluable skills which you WILL need if you are driving in traffic. Even though you might get a scooter that is legally a moped, its still money well-spent. I'm taking it this summer and hopefully will be buying a bike soon.

If you aren't opposed to getting an actual motorcycle rather than a scooter (the main difference is engine size and manual transmission), take a look at the Suzuki GZ250. About the same price as a Vespa, and cheaper than Vespas with a similar engine. A 250cc engine will be more than enough for commuting, and many people report getting 80+ mpg. Expect less in the city, of course.

As gas prices go up, I think we are going to start seeing more and more people riding scooters and motorcycles. If you honestly think about it, how often do you really NEED all the extra space a car provides? Maybe once a week for groceries? Winter as well, of course.

Oh, on a side note, Piaggio (the company that makes Vespa) is coming out with a hybrid scooter-ish vehicle. Reportedly gets 170 mpg and actually performs decently. Link (http://www.gizmag.com/go/7730/). It'll be pricey, but I can't wait to be able to afford one.
