Vet EMT/First-Aid?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Some places have specific programs , e.g.

Although the training is usually not standardized (ie certificate and all that) and lot of the caseload are cruelty/abuse/stray cases. They tend to work closely with animal control and local hospitals.

People training to be vet assistants can usually find some basic first aid courses and things like that. However, I think that most emergency work training is generally directed towards students, vet technicians, and vets themselves.

I worked with the vet who teaches that specific program. The program does go through how to give basic care to animals while not in the hospital setting. So how to set a catheter, calculate a fluid rate/fluid bolus. It covers how to deal with some of the awkward situations that animals will get in (cat in car engine), how to stabilize an impaled animal, etc. Most of what the EAMTs there do is with stray animals/injured animals and they do a lot with abuse, cruelty and abandonment cases (though I would say more of what they brought into the hospital were stray animals, the vast majority of them being injured). The program will also teach you how to thoroughly record possible abuse cases so that the owner can be prosecuted. It is basic first aid with a bit about cruelty and how to recognize it.
