Vet Experience?

Hello!!! I was wondering if you guys can answer a couple of questions about vet experience. I want to be a equine vet specializing in reproduction, I am still an undergrad, but I was wondering if I should get small animal experience as well as horses, or just stick to horses. Or any other animal experience besides horses, and if so I was wondering what you guys did or your preferance. Thanks in advance!!!🙂

I think most people here will tell you to get lots of experience with various types of animals and various fields. It seems that adcoms like the well-rounded applicant who knows the full breadth of the veterinary profession. Personally, I got accepted with my experience with lab animals in research, wildlife, and small animals in clinical settings. Don't limit yourself and experience lots of different things. This will give you good perspective on why you still want to stick with equine reproduction even after all of that. But thats just my opinion.🙂

If you want to go into equine reproduction, it would behoove you to get experience in that area as well as general experience with horses. This should probably be the bulk of your experience. You should round it out with your diversity experience in small animals, research and/or exotic. The ad coms want to see experience in your chosen specialty as well as experience in other areas so you know what else is out there.

I agree that you should have the bulk of your experience in your chosen interest, supplemented by varied experiences. It seems to me that adcoms want to see that you are open minded and willing to explore other fields of veterinary medicine. I want to go into large animal orthopedic surgery, but when I was asked about it in an interview I told them that right now that's what I want to do, but I'm open to gaining other experience and the possibility of changing my mind along the way. They seemed to like my answer 😛
