MSIV likely to be dismissed. always had vet school in the back of my mind. has anyone heard of this idea? do vet schools reject applicants that have been dismissed from their prior programs? thanks.

You would most likely have an extremely hard time getting into a US vet school after being dismissed from another professional program.

Why would they have to know that you were dismissed from a medical program... I know they ask you on the app if you've applied to vet school and been accepted before, but if it's not veterinary medicine why would you have to put it on the app?

You are required to submit ALL post-secondary transcripts. You may not "have to" tell them, but when they see 3+ years of med school transcripts.... umm... they'll speak for themselves. That would be my guess??? Good luck.

So if you want to be a human doctor... why are you going for animal? They are both really hard fields to get into... unless you are really interested and want to be an animal doctor... why wouldn't you keep trying for human? Sorry, guess I dont' understand 🙁

In your med school class how many students do you know who went to dental school or law school, got dismissed, and then just hopped into med school because it was something they always had "in the back of your mind"?

And you couldn't just decide not to send the transcripts and risk retribution... because you have to explain what you've been doing for the past 2-3 years! (or even 1 year).

Sounds like the OP should take time off, think about what went wrong, what really matters, and try to figure himself out before he ends up wasting time and money for nothing.

I don't want to seem presumptuous, but isn't vet school just as hard as med school (harder if you ask some people); and if the OP is being dismissed (I assume for academic reasons?) then why would he/she think that vet school is a good idea? And if they did get to the interview portion, I doubt an admissions committee is going to accept someone because they've always had vet med in the back of their mind.

how did you managed to get kicked out in your 4th year of med school?

"Hi, I am getting dismissed from vet school I have always had med school in the back of my mind. What do you think?"

Now, do you see how...well....silly that sounds, now that the position is reversed?

We are not a "back-up" for med students. Do yourself a favor, and if you want to do human medicine, apply to another med school. I probably sounds like a b***, but honestly, I am just sick of people who leave human med and talk about doing vet med because "Oh, its seems fun and I like animals" and "I've always had it at the back on my mind..." if those are your reasons, you are NOT ready. Forget about even getting in, let alone succeeding and an incredibly rigorous schooling experience.

Veterinary medicine is every bit as grueling as medical school, and unless you TRULY want to do this, and are TRULY dedicated to devoting your LIFE to animal medicine as opposed to human medicine...well.....don't even try. It is a waste of both your time and the time of peole who are trying to educate you in a field you are not wholly devoted to.

Now....If you worded your first post poorly and I ran with it, feel free to bash me back. If not, suck it up and apply to another med school. Vet schools do not want med school culls who apply because vet school has just been "oh, hangin out in the back of their mind..."

If you truly want vet school, you will have to take at least year and a bit off in order to get enough experience to even approach being an interviewable candidate. It will be a huge uphill battle. They will NOT let you in on the basis of having been in med school. In fact, you would have a very difficult, if not totally impossible, time getting in if you are dismissed from med school.

You can understand how it will look to admission committees "Oh, this person was dismissed from med school...and now he/she is applying to vet school? What, does he/she think we are just a back-up plan?"

I see you are also asking around in the med forums about offshore med opportunities....do you want to do vet or human? You sound like you need time off to think.

👍👍👍 To WhtsThFrequency!

I know a girl who got kicked out of vet school her second year for cheating and she was not admitted back. She is still trying to get into graduate school in fisheries and wildlife and not having much luck. She's still stuck taking post-bacc classes.

I actually know someone who had a degree in biology and she couldn't get into vet school so she applied to med school because she thought it would be easier.. and she got in!

That is a completely different scenario. The OP is a 4th year med student, not a person with a bio degree trying to figure out which aspect of medicine they want to practice.

I think some people here are missing a few major points here...when you are dismissed from medical school for certain reasons, you can never get into another med school. There are a few reasons a person could be dismissed - at some really strict med schools, he could have failed a shelf exam on a rotation and they are trying to dismiss him and not give him a second chance. But then he could try to transfer to a lower tier school and finish his degree. Because he is posting in the vet forum, it seems more likely to me that it was more serious - he could have been cheating (in which case no medical school will EVER accept him! That is specifically written in a lot of admissions policies), vandalizing/fighting, or who knows? he could have been stealing drugs from the hospital and shooting up in the bathroom...

To the OP: You will not be able to fool vet adcoms after 3.5 years of med school. They will find out that you were in med school, and you can bet they'll find out why you were dismissed. If it's a reason that will keep you out of med schools for the rest of your life, it will keep you out of vet schools too. If it's not, then you should apply to a Carib med school and finish your 4th year. Applying to vet school at this point doesn't seem to make sense to me.
