Vet school backups: Applying to grad school simultaneously

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am actually the class representative/president for the Masters of Laboratory Animal Sciences Program at Drexel right now.

I did not get in to veterinary school the first time (I only applied to Penn), and so I applied to this program AFTER I heard the decision from Penn, which was not until April. You can usually apply for programs, such as the MLAS program at Drexel, later on. I believe the deadline for the program is not until July 1st of the year you wish to start (July 1st, 2010 for 2010 enrollment). I also know that my roomates from undergrad were able to apply to their masters programs very late (they were applying to medical school).

So my advice for you is to find some alternatives and check the deadlines and then decide... but if you really want to do the Drexel program as your alternative, you are able to apply AFTER you find out about veterinary school. And it is a GREAT alternative, as I am highly prepared for the application this year and feel 10 times more confident. If you want to speak to me specifically about this program, I would be more than happy to talk to you about it and can give you contact information for the program director and any other information you need.

Good luck : )

I just wanted to say make sure you consider residency if you end up doing a master's. You mentioned Drexel - Pennsylvania has pretty strict residency requirements, and being here for school doesn't count (you have to be here for work for a year). So if you were going Drexel --> Penn you might have to apply to Penn as an out of state resident.

Or conversely if you want to do a master's and apply to the school where you are now (not sure how long your bf will be in grad school for), make sure you won't lose your in state residency by going to school somewhere else.

Anyway good luck on applications to you and your bf!

Hi I am in the process of applying to the MLAS program at Drexel and I was wondering if you could share more details about the structure. Are you able to work at all? How do you like it - do you feel you are getting good preparation for vet school? Are you still planning on applying to vet school after you graduate?

I have a pretty weak undergrad GPA and am struggling with how to make myself more competitive. I have talked with Dr Messina there and he seemed to think this would help me, but some of the vet schools have a differing opinion. So, I am confused, but still working on competing my application!

Thanks for any info you are willing to share.
