Hi, I have been accepted to Murdoch Uni for Feb. 2011. I have already submitted my FAFSA to the uni and I am currently waiting on the results. I am in need of financial help in regards to paying for the stuff that is required BEFORE I get there. (ie. plane tickets, OSHC, visas, etc.) I basically require about 8k before I can leave. That's insane. From experience and from word of mouth I have been told that I am most likely not going to receive any of the FA through the school until much closer to the start of term. So, my question to you all is, is what advice/options do you know of that I could look into in order to receive aid elsewhere? I have already looked into grants and scholarships and from the ones that I have found, I am not not eligible for them bc of my situation. They either only want a US school, or a certain major, etc. and most grants are for "starting businesses" and research. So any info will be tremendously helpful. Thanks!

I feel your pain, I really do. It cost me several thousand just to move to Kansas--I'd easily bet on 8K for Oz.

Options I looked into at the time were a personal loan from your bank (yes, they do exist), personal loan from a credit union if you or your parents belong to one (such as Navy Federal, etc), putting as much on credit cards as possible, and asking parents/grandparents for personal loans complete with promissory notes, etc. Whatever option you choose, I'd be sure to pay it back IMMEDIATELY after getting your financial aid package unless the interest rate on the loan is less than the interest rate for your student loans.

Sorry I don't have a better solution for you. Good luck--and congratulations!! I have a friend finishing clinics at Murdoch and her entire experience just sounds absolutely amazing. 🙂

Thanks, alliecat

I asked my mom about personal loans and she said not to go there because their interest rates are insane, or something. Also, my mom is more broke than I am, so asking her for money is not an option. I DID have an American express credit card but we canceled our account with them I think because they were taking away too many of the benefits that made them a better CC company? and i think they they started going downhill in regards to service, and such recently.

I hate to say it, but you may need to suck it up and take a personal loan from your bank/credit union no matter what the interest rate. If you don't have money, you don't have money. You're not in a position to be choosy at this point.

I was able to sell my car and all my worldly possessions and make about $8K to get started in New Zealand. Do you have anything you can sell?

Otherwise, if you have time to apply for another credit card and charge airfare, etc, to it, then I'd give that a try.

In other words, I agree with alliecat. 😀

Thanks for the input laura,

Yes I do plan to sell my car (and my husbands)as well, however of course that wont be til right before we leave, seeing as we need them now. =) And I have looked into selling a few things, we have alot of unopened gifts from our wedding and Ive been told I can return them for cash, and I have a nice designer purse I can "try" to sell, but with this economy no one is going to spend 500 on a purse ( louis vuitton, it was a grad gift ). So like I said in my original post, I really have thought about all likely options, I just figured maybe someone else had something that I havent thought of yet.

Do the math. If you take out a personal loan, or even just use a bunch of credit card debt, if you can hold to a month or two before you get your FA, then it is hardly a blip in the overall cost of your education.

8000 loan @ 15% interest rate is still only gonna be $100 a month and you can probably do considerably less than that. If you have a local bank or credit union they may even consider a "bridge" loan that they know ahead of time is only going to be short term if you can show them your FA award is guaranteed.

ALso be creative and consider a private loan. If you know anyone with funds they may be very interested to make some easy money off of you (assuming they trust you since I doubt you have any assets to put up as collateral). This could be a local grocery store, or vet clinic you worked at, or even a professor or ritchy bitchy college acquaintance. . Don't be shy about asking. Worst thing they can say is no.

And don't feel like you are asking a favor. You are asking to make a business arrangement. You are paying a fee for a service. You never know who might say yes.

I second SOV's post.

Definitely talk to the vet clinic your worked at (or shadowed at, providing you're in good standing with them).
My clinic was more than willing to help me out with numerous expenses for school.

or take out a personal loan with your bank 😛
