I was wondering what a typical summer during vet school is like? Do most people work during the summers? Take classes? Stay at school and get more practice?
Thank you in advance!!

It's really pretty variable. You can do whatever you want to do.

Some people go home and work in clinics. Some people work on fishing boats in Alaska. Some people do research. Others work at Starbucks. The lucky few go backpacking in Europe.

The teaching hospital may offer jobs or unpaid learning opportunities (experience in large animal, small animal, etc). Generally the school will not offer any classes for vet students.

I've know people who have: gone off to research whales, worked for Banfield, worked in clinics, traveled, or just did nothing.

Tennessee has a research program during the summer where students are matched up with faculty on research projects and get paid to work on those. Many people go home. We had a decent amount working at Banfield. Some of us worked in places outside of the field. This summer a classmate and I are traveling to South Africa to do a vet student safari. It's our last summer this year so I'm probably not going to work so I can enjoy the break (it probably wouldn't be an easier summer to find work anyways with the economy).
But it really varies. It all depends on what you want to do and if you feel like learning more throughout the summer.

vet student safari..... that sounds very interesting. How did you find out about it?🙂

Dr. Peter Brothers was going around to a bunch of the vet schools last year and he came to TN and did a lunch, dinner, and wet lab for the students. I checked out his site after the first dinner and was super excited about it. He's really nice and the trip sounded great. His website is http://www.brotherssafaris.com. I think the name of the vet students trip is the basic immobilization safari or something like that. I believe he has it listed under the specialty safaris.
