I have a vet tech assistant working interview tomorrow and I do not know what to expect. The job description is looking for someone who is qualified. I was wondering if anyone's done a working interview to become a vet tech assistant and can offer me any tips or just let me know what I should expect to do.

Thanks in advance.

Are you qualified? If you are I wouldn’t be worried. I would imagine the working interview will be over restraining techniques, possibly simple things like nail trims, maybe blood draws? At my clinics we never had vet tech assistants, only vet techs and kennel techs so I’m not sure what all they do.

Well, I did a working interview when I started working as an assistant, but to be honest I don't really remember much other than learning the clinics computer program.

I would think due to liability purposes you wouldn't be doing too much restraint but that is solely an educated guess:shrug:

My tip would be listen to direction carefully, ask questions to make sure you understand what you're doing, and my best tip for working interviews is take initiative. Like if there is a lull, ask what you can be helping with, etc

They probably want to make sure you're not a jerk, and that you're capable of doing or learning to do what they need you to do. Be yourself! Bring a positive attitude!

My vet just showed me what to do and then asked me to do it to see if I listened, learned quickly and could perform the tasks. He taught me the portable X-ray machine, and now I've learned to run the ultrasound machine. Seriously the interview will probably be that you know the basic terms he/she is using and can follow instructions and learn quickly.

The only working interview Ive had (vs just a quick interview at the clinic) I didn't actually do anything ( liability), just followed the head tech around for 4 hours while she narrated how they did things there.

For my vet assistant working interview, I didn’t do much hands on. I toured the clinic and restrained one dog.

For my tech working interview, I shadowed a tech for one room, then did the next few rooms myself, which consisted of getting history and TPR then helping the vet restrain.

The working interview let’s the clinic know you can work well with both human and animal clients.
