This may be way off, but while I was standing in line at MEPS someone was talking about veteran status comes after 6 years and this gives you lifelong medical insurance. Is this true?

I have 6 years, in no way do I have "life long" benefits.

You need to serve 20.

Life long benefits only come with 1) retirement 2) work related and medically documented disability.

Once on active duty you obtain "veteran status" for things like VA mortgages - but as mentioned above - medical benefits take much longer.
