I thought this would make for some great conversation, as I love playing video games (such as COD). Anyone notice a link between hardcore gamers and certain specialities?

Maybe using the system controllers is like laproscopy or endoscopy? Looking at the TV screen and reading rad images? The immediate results video games deliver is like the results seen in the ER? Do gamers gravitate to center fields?

This is just for ****s and giggles, btw, not basing my life decision on this before I get flamed...

Hi, I'm Dr. Suchandsuch. I'll be overseeing your cholecystectomy.

And this is Xx_RainbowDash_420BlazeIt_xX. He'll be performing the laparoscopy.

Dr. IHOPEUCHOKE will be your anesthesiologist today.

Anesthetists have been playing games in the OR since snake, but yeah, I imagine the motor/spatial skills gamers develop would help in robot assisted surgery or laparoscopy.

I'm picking a specialty based on how much time I can hide away to play video games. Looks like path it is...

Bleh.

Highly overrated.

Except for an occasional foray into Frogger or Pac Man when hanging out at the Round Table in HS, I've never played a video game. Modern day games on laptops give me motion sickness.

Yet somehow I managed to have enough hand-eye coordination and spatial relationship skills to be a pretty good laparoscopist.

I'm in ur abdomn, pwnin ur gallbladdr!
lol

I do think laparoscopy makes more sense to someone used to video game camera/control interfaces. Everyone kept telling me how hard it would be to operate the angled scopes, but it seemed very intuitive to me. Don't know if that's because of my gaming background or some other factor, but that's what you get with n=1.

Lol this thread is awesome.

That being said, I was told I was decently good (for a med student) with laprascopy. I told them I played a lot of Halo 2 when I was younger. They giggled. The one benefit of console gaming to PC is that laprascopy isn't controlled with a mouse and keyboard. Would probably make sniping esophageal varices easier since you wouldn't have to rely on stupid auto aim to get kills.... I mean successful bands.

'nuff said nubcake. I shall ezpk that gall bladder. Make that hernia autoTP to town. Those boobies will perk up at the mere sight of my Mayo-Hegars. My surgeries will be works of art. 😛

Not even sure what this means.

But Olsen-Hegars >>>>>>>Mayo-Hegars.

Well, I don't always have a medical student available to me to cut the suture too short or too long which is why prefer to cut them myself.

That's 'cause you don't have me as a student.

Easy fix, though. Just tell them before they start with you that they need to be able to eyeball lengths in mm and to practice. During surgery, say cut x mm from knot. Easy-peasy.

i'll have to give that a try. They couldn't be any worse than the scrub nurses who seem to be unable to understand the metric system.
