According to the ERAS FAQ, the "view my ERAS application" shows what the application will look like to program directors.

Do the program directors also get see the "View your CV"?

Or is that just for our personal use (ie giving it to LOR writers)

Because my formatting ends up all funky in the latter, but looks fine in the former.

Thanks

Good question, I'm wondering that too. It's quite annoying.

Everything I have read from aPD is that you should expect things to look funny, and not to do anything crazy (html code etc.) to try and fix it.

Still curious of the official answer though.

So I called ERAS today (help desk) and asked what the deal was.

Apparently they use two different programs to generate the "view my CV" and "view my ERAS application". The former does not recognize soft returns (simply pressing the enter key to start a new line), but instead will keep the text continuous. The latter will recognize soft returns.

Although html tags like the <br> will appear to work, they have had instances in previous years where the code shows up with the rest of the text in the application, depending on what computer/internet browser/etc is being used. They advise NOT to use html tags.

They said I could try using the space bar and enter key to create some combination of white space that would acquiesce to both formats, however they could not guarantee that this formatting would always appear the way we want it as there is some variation in computers, internet browsers, and other files that our applications are converted to.

They also said they receive numerous calls about this every year, and they don't have any real good advice on what to do to address this formatting problem.

I don't know what I will do as having chunks of prose in the CV format looks horrible, I'd rather have bulleted lists.

I searched these forums and it seems like the program directors use actual ERAS software to download the applications. They see it in normal format (not the wierd CV format we can see). I think it all works out, only thing is if you bring you CV with you, you should just make one of your own; don't use the eras-generated one.

If you are listing things you could always just drop a ";" at the end between entries. That way things will still be clearly separated

Agreed. I definitely busted out the semicolon for to make both look good.
