"In a blog post, Chokal-Ingam explains how he ended up getting into the St. Louis University School of Medicine despite his low GPA and MCAT score:

So, I shaved my head, trimmed my long Indian eyelashes, and applied to medical school as a black man. My change in appearance was so startling that my own fraternity brother didn’t recognize me at first. I even joined the Organization of Black Students and started using my embarrassing middle name that I had hidden from all of my friends since I was a 9 years old.

Vijay the Indian-American frat boy bec[a]me Jojo the African American Affirmative Action applicant to medical school.
Chokal-Ingam ended up dropping out of medical school.

He has since become an activist against affirmative action. He is also apparently in the process of writing a book, titled, “Almost Black – The True Story Of An Indian American Who Got Into Medical School Pretending To Be An African American.”

TLDR: Indian student shaves his head/eyebrows and pretends to be black to apply to med school with a 31/3.1 in the late 90's. Interviewed at Columbia, Wash U, GWU, Sinai, U Pitt, U Penn, Yale, Rochester, and Case. Also applied to Harvard, Cornell, Vandy, Wisconsin, and Emory after receiving targeted minority e-mails. Accepted to St. Louis COM and rejected everywhere else. Ended up withdrawing from medical school.

The guy himself is the frat mega-douche sibling of Kelly from The Office.

He would have gotten into a DO school easily with a 31 MCAT.

He applied in 1998-1999. He definitely would have gotten into an MD school, especially a lower ranked one/Caribbean school as an Asian with a 3.1 and a 31 in 1998. This story is bogus. Admission at DO school with those metrics would have been guaranteed.

Classic Desmosthenes btw.

He is trolling: "Not everything worked out as planned. Cops harassed me. Store clerks accused me of shoplifting. Women were either scared of me or couldn't keep their hands off me. What started as a devious ploy to gain admission to medical school turned into twisted social experiment."

He applied, as a black male, and was rejected from 12 out of the 13 schools. Mind you, this is in 1999, well before medical school competitiveness started to ratchet up.

How did he bypass the legal requirements when applying to med school? Its not like you can show a fake passport

Ok....but...BS or not. That Indian dude could totally bass for a black man. With the hair could short and training in how not to bobble the head back forth when talking and a full immersion in black culture and dialect...Jojo could've been easily mistaken for a brother.

Just pointing out the possibilities in the script.

It's already been done

Yeah. Probably one of the worst movies in history. Less of a stretch in than in the OP.

I smell the strong smell of bull****.

while it is true his experiment lacked much scientific rigor... i wonder how much the author of that article understands the med school process? author mentioned SLU isn't that great of a medical school as one of his claims against the dood... which is like what? many ppl would be happy with anything.

True that. I think the author was simply implying that with his average stats he could have gotten into an average school, regardless of the race card. One thing the author failed at was using stats from when Jojo was applying to school, which would have shown his stats to be more competitive in any mid tier school. According to this non scholarly source, the '99 matriculating LizzyM score was 66 (65 if done with the science GPA only). Jojo's was a 62. With excellent ECs, he could have found a mid-, lower mid- tier school.

From his on-paper application he got interviews at a bunch of top schools, but then his only offer was to a mid-low tier school... How many applicants interview at Columbia, Wash U, Sinai, Pitt, Penn, and Yale but end up at SLU? I'm guessing they sniffed out his BS at the interview.

"After two years and a lot of soul searching I realized I just wasn’t cut out to be a doctor. I dropped out of medical school for many reasons, but not being black was not one of them."

This isn't true at all. He was dismissed after receiving two failing grades, which was SLU's policy at the time.

I know one of the SLU professors that failed him.

There was also some **** that went down involving his girlfriend turning him into the police over a possible threat to that professor after his dismissal. That professor had to be escorted around campus by security for a few weeks. The police found brownie mix and arsenic in a mixer in his apartment. His girlfriend would not testify and SLU did not prosecute.

damnnnnnnn

Yeah. This is my best recollection. I never saw the police reports myself, but I can verify that the security escort was used at SLU.

I think this grab for fame is going to blow up in his face when the truth gets published. I'd keep an eye out for articles involving SLU's side of things.

But...but...racism! Affirmative action! And stuff!!!!

Apparently it's still SLU's policy:

"Upon receipt of a grade of F, a student will be required to meet with the CSPPP and then will be notified in writing that a second grade of F acquired during Year 3 will be considered grounds for dismissal from the School of Medicine."

He's nice enough to supply his final transcript on his website:

Who fails the Psychiatry clerkship? That's like almost impossible for any med student to fail.

Failed IM, peds, and psych. With a transcript like that, I'm almost surprised that he was smart enough to blackout his social security number.

I just saw this on the news. I wish I was born black to get accepted into the best schools with mediocre grades.

I started a thread about this a week ago, but it got moved to a place where most can't see it including me. The statistics published by the AAMC confirm their is a huge gap between the higher standards for whites/Asians and the lower standards for blacks. Thank you affirmative action, if you are born the wrong race, you must work harder.

Why don't you mention all the disadvantages of being a minority? Go cry elsewhere, nobody here cares about your tears. Grow up
