It seems like a lot of people have been accepted already... but no one is posting here.

I'm not 100% sure.....but its pretty damn close! I have an interview at NYMC next week, so I'll see how that goes. I'm REALLY excited about VCU though, I absolutely loved the school when I was there....I'm an OOS from California.

Thought I'd get things started! Anyone planning on VCU for sure?

Hey there...I was 99.9% sure two weeks ago but the tide has turned. It may seem weird to state this, but, deciding where to go is stressing me out more than the application process itself...

Jillibean, are you DEFINITELY going or still waiting on some other apps?

I'm still waiting on other apps... we'll see what happens.

Good luck with the decisions!

its my only acceptance thus far. loved the urban feel of the campus. don't know, however, if i can deal with the conservative nature of the city and surroundings. also, city doesn't seem diverse at all: only saw white and african american. students seem very happy though and thats a big plus for me. .

richmond....conservative in the same sentence?? I went to undergrad at VCU and Im always on the medical campus doing something...if you guys decide to go to vcu you wont regret it. Its an excellent school and when your done with your work theres a lot to do in richmond. Congrats to you all !!

Possible future MCV student right here. I really liked the school and surrounding community, but I'm still waiting on other schools, so I guess I'll just see what happens.

Just got accepted to VCU! I'm not sure about where I will be attending medical school. Yesterday I was 95% sure I would be at GW. So we'll see.....😍

Hi....I'm 95% sure that I will be at VCU next fall...still thinking about some other acceptances...but I think VCU will win out....anyone else decided for sure yet?

sooo..anyone leaning toward vcu????

Hey and congrats to you guys going to VCU next fall. I'm a dental student (don't bash me yet 😛 ) just wanted to let you know I have a house and am renting 3 rooms. If anyone needs a quiet, clean, place to stay IM me back. Its about 2.7 miles for MCV (I don't drive to school). You'd have your own bathroom and possible a park in the garage. Let me know! And good luck!

Thought I'd see how things were going here-- I am now a first year med student here at VCU/MCV. If any of you have any questions, I'll happily help you out as best I can! :luck:

Are you basically satisfied with the caliber of education that you have received thus far at VCU? In other words has the school met your expectations?

I'll go ahead an answer that...

I am definately satisfied with the school. The tests are fair and the material is laid out for you in a very easy way to understand. The syllabi are nicely organized and contain all the info you need. The only problem is the sheer volume of info. It is a lot to absorb.

It is also nice that MCV does the foundations of clinical medicine course throughout 1st and 2nd year. That way when you go to the wards you are able to do all the physical exams and are less clueless. The hospital size and patient population at MCV ensure that you will have incredible exposure to all major illnesses and medical specialties.

I am strongly thinking about VCU and am wondering about housing and what the quaility and cost of life is in the city of richmond. I don't really remember to many details from what they said on the tour (back in spetember) other then "the fan" seemed to be a place alot of students lived. Also wondering about safety and transportation (parking vs taking the bus). Also does anyone know if there is a second look weekend or anything like that I couldn't find any information on the website. Anybody know?

How did you find out? I tried calling the admissions office and they had no idea what I was talking about...

I completely agree with instatewaiter. But, the volume of info is that of a med school education, so, that wasn't much of a surprise! I have yet to find an instance that I'm looking for something that VCU/MCV/Richmond does not offer... I wanted to learn medical Spanish, gain ob/gyn experience, do political stuff, feel as though I'm doing Step1 prep as early as possible (Dr. Costanzo!), go to the ballet/museums/good restaurants/independent films, live in a house with a yard + decent rent and short commute but still be part of a city. I'm not from Virginia, so I used winter break to travel around Virginia. I've gone hiking in West Virginia one weekend and to Virginia Beach the following weekend. There's certainly enough to do to keep a "life" outside of school. I don't really know what you mean by "caliber" of education, though. We all use learn from the same books and take the same Boards, so the caliber is the same from school to school. With that said, different schools have different ways of exposing you to the material, though. For example, we have problem based learning (TBL), early clinical exposure (FCM), a blocked curriculum, no competition between classmates (see our class websites!), extra help beyond the classroom if you want it (tutors, office hours, study skills workshops), and *constant* student feedback to the administration if we don't like something! I hope this helps.

Hi everyone. Im still waiting to find out if VCU is going to accept me. It's my first choice out of my interviews, but I wont hear until March 15th. Are any of you willing to list your GPAs/MCAT scores to give the hopefuls an idea of whose been accepted so far? Thanks!

I'm waiting with you. I went to VCU after my 2 acceptances thinking I could like this school more than those two....and I really did like it! (idk how i rank it against the others, but i think the quality of education is probably better than both). I will be really honored and excited to get an acceptance, one that I really really want now! g/l nka

Hi Guys,

I just received an e-mailing stating that my status has changed. When I looked at my status on-line it said that "The committee's file review indicates that they are interested in your candidacy. However, due to the increase in the applicant pool this year, it is clear we MAY be unable to interview all the candidates at your priority score. If we do find that we are able to grant an interview you will be notified by e-mail." Has anyone else received the same status? If so what are you planning on doing about it? I would really love to interview at the school. I realize that it's late, but does anyone know whether they are still interviewing? Thanks and good luck!

Just got the good news- I'm joining the VCU class of 2011!! Just curious- will I get something in the regular mail- like acceptance info- or only after I submit the deposit and matriculation forms online? I am so excited I havent stopped smiling since getting the news. Holy sh** they're gonna let me be a doctor?!! 😀 😀

hey VCU c/o 2011! i'm almost certain as of now that i'll be at VCU this fall. i hope we have a fun class! where is everyone from?

also is there really a second look weekend? i think someone a few posts back wrote that there was...

oh, and when do people normally start figuring out their housing situation (place to live and roommates)? i'm from out-of-state. will i need to make a special trip to Richmond to figure that out?

also, what exactly is 'the fan" ? i didn't really catch on when i interviewed.

i'm thinking of getting a house and would love to have anyone in my class (or otherwise at VCU) as roommates... the 'fan' is the cool place to be 😉 the streets in that area "fan out" thus it's called the 'fan'.

i don't know exactly what area i want to live in, but i definitely don't want to be too far from campus. now with an official acceptance in hand, i will start taking a closer look at homes. i'm from CA, but i'll be in town around june to make some final decisions. 🙂 . congrats to everyone 😀

I am going to VCU! I am from florida, where are you from? 🙂

I am OOS and definitely will be at VCU next fall as well. This is a bit of what I know about living in Richmond - the Fan seems like a cool place to live and I've heard that a lot of people really like it..but...bc it's right next to the undergrad campus at VCU.....you have to be careful where you live if you don't want to be in the middle of the undergrad college scene....I am thinking about living downtown..I've heard lots of good things...it's close to school...and close to lots of things to do. I am definitely open to finding roomates - I heard that in June, VCU will give us user names and passwords and that we'll be able to sign onto some sort of online bulletin board where people can look for roomates, etc. Would be nice if they had a second look weekend though. I've called the add. office and asked directly about it and they were totally lost...had no idea what I was talking about...so..who knows. Anyway...congrats to all you guys..hopefully we'll have a great class.

Hey guys I'm a current 1st year at MCV/VCU and am originally from Richmond. Figure I might as well answer some questions.

The school does open up a message board in the late spring/early summer for the incoming class. That is how I found my roommate and is a good way to find a place to live.

The housing situation in Richmond is relatively easy. While some of the better places will fill up early, you should have no problem finding a good place to live if you start your search in June.

The geographic boarders of 'the fan' are as follows:
N/S boundaries: Between Broad (north) and cary street (South)
The East west boundaries: between Belvedere on the east and boulevard on the west

The western boundary is somewhat arbitrary and some consider the fan to be a mile or so west of boulevard. There are bars on Robinson as well as main st.
Generally the more west you go the 'safer' the area but the fan is generally safe.
However the fan will generally be 1-3 miles away from MCV. I am pretty sure that the buses are free for VCU students though. There is parking available for around 150/semester (year?)

In addition to the fan you can also live in church hill (East of 20th st). This is much closer to MCV. There are some sketch areas especially the northern part of church hill but you can find nice areas too. Some parts have beautiful views of the city or of the river.

Shockoe bottom is prolly the closest area to the school. It is generally around 14th-20th st, south of franklin. There are a lot of bars and night life around here. Kinda sketchy but not too bad. Convenient for going out and for getting to class in the morning. An easy walk.

As to the whole, 'undergrad college scene' since VCU is in an urban campus unless you are right on top of the undergrad campus you prolly wont feel like you are in a college town.

More questions, PM me or post them here.

Hey all- I am an M1 at VCU this year, and I just wanted to say congrats to everyone who got in. 😀

Instatewaiter or Tangent, is it a pretty even breakdown of where the med students live in those areas? Would you say a majority of students live in the fan or closer to the MCV campus?

There are definately a lot of students that live in each of these areas. Honestly I dont know which has more students but since the fan is much larger by area I would guess most live in the fan.

I now live on the outskirts of the fan and while it is great for first and second year, I think I am going to move third year so that I can be closer to the hospital.

i just looked at our "class directory" i think more live downtown, but there are quite a few that live in the fan and several that live in the west end

i live sort of between the fan and the west end

Hey Guys,
I live in Baltimore and was accepted to VCU in january. I was 100% sure I would attend until I got accepted from Univ. of Kansas with scholarship for OOS tuition, fees and books ~ $45,000. Now, that's a lot and everyone's telling me I'd be stupid to give up a partial full ride. VCU is my top choice and I'm just waiting to receive their financial aid award letter to see if I'm being offered any scholarship. I'm also searching for outside grants/scholarships that might make my decision easier.

I'll be attending the second look weekend which kicks off with a dinner on Friday April 20 at 6pm I believe. [For more info, contact Ms. Donna Jackson at 804-828-0997 in the Office of Student Outreach Programs because they coordinate it]. I think it's weird that the admissions office didn't know anything about it. I got a letter in the mail and had to return a form indicating whether I'll be attending or not. Congrats to all those who've been accepted-- I really hope I end up joining you guys.

Congrats on your scholarship to Kansas! That rocks.

Question about the second look at VCU - did that letter come with your acceptance pack or was it mailed seperately? Is it Saturday and Sunday also or just Friday evening and Saturday?

Thanks 🙂

Thanks Grimlock,
It was mailed separately signed Ms. Donna Jackson from the Office of Student Outreach Programs. I believe it's just the dinner on friday evening and I'm guessing tour of the school and other events on saturday ending around 3pm or so. These details were not in the letter-- I called to ask specifically since I work.

Question for Instatewaiter and Tangent:

Do you think it would be better to live along the campus connector shuttle route? That way if you're studying in school till late, you can get home safely rather than walking to say shockoe bottom & church hill or to the parking lots [which I've heard are pretty far away...] I'm considering the fan area mainly because of this, but then again, I don't want to have to worry about noisy undergrads or something. I plan on living on my own in a studio apt at least for my first year but would prefer to live around graduate/medical students. Do you have any recommendations?

I'll be there. I'm from Utah. Does anybody know when the first day of the semester is?

Well i do know that VCU has 'an escort service' that will drive you home if you are there late so that is not really an issue.

Parking lots are around 4-5 blocks away. I have never really felt threatened, but again, if you do, the escort service will pick you up and drop you off where you need to go.

The areas that are heavy with undergrads are going to be the blocks from around the 1000-1600 blocks of the fan (of streets that run E-W). Honestly though, it is not really bad in those areas either since they are mixed in with families and young professionals.

I was told that orientation is from August 13 - 17 and classes start August 20. You may want to call and confirm just incase the dates have been changed since then.
