Does any one know how many OOS students Virginia takes? The stats on predents.com say they take 38% but I heard that about WVU too and then found out that WVU usually only takes OOS students who have connections. Is thia true for Virginia as well? I'd appreciate some advice, thanks!🙂

Connections and being from Utah sure helps. I'm from NY (received my MS from VCU before I decided to apply), but I think something like 19 of approx 35 out of staters in the class of 2011 are from Utah.

Agreed. 40/100 are usually OOS. VCU has a "contract" for those from Utah (12/year I think). If my info is not exactly right, please set me straight. There is some good reasoning behind this.

Please explain further. I see that a lot of the the oos are from BYU and Utah, but don't exactly know the relationship between VCU and Utah school system.

As far as I know there is no official agreement between VCU and Utah. I am at BYU-Idaho and I am pretty sure that BYU (in Utah) consistently has more dental school applicants than any other school in the nation. BYU-Idaho is getting quite a few now too (it was the 5th largerst "feeder" school for Case a couple years ago). I think the reason for the high numbers from Utah is the very large number of applicants that come from there.

I don't know about a program or contract with Utah per se, but I know VCU reserves about 5 spots for Kuwaitis as well...and those with connections to the school. Other than that, a bunch of spots go to people from Utah. After that, there may be somewhere around 15 spots left for out of staters?

The catch is this. It is hard to get in as an instater because about 95% that are accepted take the acceptance. On the other hand, only a small percentage of out of staters accept a spot at VCU leaving more seats open. Instate is competitive because so many instaters apply. Out of state is competitive because they accept so few, but I think your chance as an out of stater isn't so bad if you the stats to get an interview.

Really? Does Kuwait not have a dental school? Or what's the deal with this? Seems like a country with 3.4 million people ought to have more than 5 dentists per year being trained.

I honestly am not certain of the details. I believe there is some sort of program that VCU participates in along with UWV and BU (I think). There are 3 schools that accept Kuwaitis this way. Their gov't pays for their education here in the states. Sweet deal if you ask me 😉 I am a bit jealous.

I know there is no way of knowing if I would have been accepted or not, but I was offered an interview for mid-January last year at WVU as an OOS from Texas. I have absolutely no ties to the school.

Hey there,

Kuwait do have a dental school but in the same time the government send some students to VCU on a scholarship to study dentistry. I can't say it is an official contract between Kuwait and VCU, its only verbal agreement. We have to finish all the requirement and do well in the DAT (19 AA and above) to get in, if not then we have to re-apply. In other words, it is the same for us as all applicants.

I think you misunderstood Master Pain. He was saying they accept 12 people per year from Utah, not that there is some kind of 12 year obligation to work in Utah/Virginia or whatever.

Yeah...though there are more than 12 from Utah in the class of 2011.

I can see where you misunderstood me...no 12 yr contract - It is my understanding that there are 12 spots (or so) reserved for the aforementioned folks and 5 for the Kuwaitis. I'm in agreement w/ above post...sweet deal. Don't give up on applying to VCU. It's a great school and totally worth your effort! Good luck and GOd speed!👍
