Hi there,

One of my question ask how viruses initate a process that is similar to autophagy.

I'm a little lost here. I know that a virus inserts their genetic material to the host cell which may be incorporated into the host DNA and that autophagy is the fusion of a lysosome and an autophagosome to digest the cell's material. I'm a little confuse on how the process is similar. Can someone help me out? Thanks

I don't know how they would be similar since one focuses more on replication and the other in digestion. As you know, with virus you can follow the lytic or lysogenic cycle but with autophagy, this would be an example http://course1.winona.edu/sberg/ILLUST/erythroblast2.gif

Viruses need building blocks for their own replication and can cause the cell to autodigest some of its components (ie autophagy) to provide these building blocks once it's infected.

So the viruses uses the cellular products of autophagy such as the amino acids and nucleotides so that they can produce their transcribed rna and proteins right?

Also can we say that the lytic cycle of the virus is similar to autophagy since both are breaking down materials?

What I think they were getting at is that during the viral replication process, fragments of viral DNA can get left over in the cell genome. The cell can express viral antigens on its surface, and stimulate the immune system (i.e. macrophages) to recognize that cell as foreign, and initiate autodigestion of those cells that expressed the viral antigens. Sorry, I would give a more detailed explanation, but I have been studying for a couple exams this week. Hopefully this helped out a little.

Oh Okay that makes more sense. Thanks so much and good luck with your exams.
