Vision Therapy Salary

Hi all,
I'm very interested in pursuing a career in vision therapy. I hear the salary is less than what could be had working in a typical private/commercial practice, but is it possible to make around 80-90K as a vision therapy optometrist? I'm hoping to work in the NY/Tri-State area...

Attempted to do a search online but couldn't find any VT-specific salaries.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated 🙂

Vision therapy is often a service offered in addition to other aspects of primary optometry. It would be close to impossible to have a practice dedicated soley to vision therapy. But specializing in vision therapy or becoming board certified in COVD would definitely allow a doctor a higher than average income.

A woman in my hometown has a very successful VT practice. If you can have a successful VT practice, an advantage she points out is that you can still be making money even when you're not there. Since you can make the VT plans and leave it to the therapists if you have to take a day or two off for a meeting or something.

I would disagree that VT doctors earn less than primary care optometrists. We've had several lectures at SCO about VT and opening a VT practice. It is definitely possible to earn just as much or more than a primary care optometrist. I know there are several very successful VT practices here in Memphis. We learned that $100 is around the average charge for a VT session. Patients need on average 8-12 weeks of VT. You can make a killing with enough patient volume. Anyway, if you want to do VT, don't get discouraged. Primary care optometrists need good VT docs to refer to!

That really is the point. I do a little bit of VT in my office but i've had a hell of a time growing that aspect of my practice. All the patients view it as academic therapy and therefore think the school should be paying for it. Tough to get it going.

Yes, this is what they tell us at school. But many ODs have said that the ability to take medical insurance is key to your practice's income. To my little knowledge, most medical insurance do not see VT and will not pay for it..?
