I went to visit OUCOM last week. I was very impressed with their facilities, of course the one down fall is there is no hospital associated with it. This is a common issue amongst osteopathic schools, but I was still impressed. They told me that they were the only osteopathic school to have a 100% pass rate on the manipulation part of the COMLEX. They have plans to build a new building that would house some new classrooms and research facilities. And to top it all of, they were ranked 6th in the nation for party schools. For those of you who are not from Ohio, they are notorious for their Halloween party. Anyways, they have HUGE flat screens in their manipulation classroom so that they can have a camera in the anatomy lab taping the area where they are learning to manipulate. Interesting if you ask me. The main building for the school use to be a dorm, just an interesting piece of information. If you want further information PM me. :luck:

I visited the OU-COM campus a couple of weeks ago on the way back from a family vacation and I thought the campus and surrounding areas were beautiful. I didn't go inside because I was not prepared to present myself to anyone, but the area was really nice. OU-COM definitely has a couple of advantages -- The CORE Hospitals and their affiliation with an undergraduate university, which offers research and dual degrees opportunities. If given the opportunity to consider OU-COM, I absolutely will.

I'd say OU-COM would be more well known in the osteopathic world if you didn't have to sign the 5 year agreement. When I apply in 5-6yrs OU-COM will be my number one choice. Of course, I am a Ohio resident living less than 1 1/2hrs away from there too.

i wish they didn't have the 5 year agreement, i know that's what deterred me from that school. other than that i think it would have been an ideal place for me

Same here.

If you do an AOA-approved residency in Ohio, then that counts toward the 5-year requirement.

You could do a family medicine/peds/ob-gyn/radiology residency there in Ohio, and never have to practice IN Ohio.

I am definitely well aware that it sucks when you live there. Both my husband and my best friend from high school went there, and they said it was fun for a year and then it got old. But hey, it is an experience! It would be a great break from studying!!

I'm sorry, but would someone explain the 5 year agreement? I looked at their website but wasn't able to find the answer to that.

Thanks!

Out-of-state students must practice 5 yeas in Ohio.

Thank you for the link and definition. Wow, was not aware that schools practiced this. Do many of the DO schools have an agreement like this?

No other osteopathic or allopathic medical school that I know of has such a stipulation.

haha..yeah it would be a good break. in the past few years it has really died down a lot i think (i just graduated).

You don't have to live downtown to go to OU. I live 10 minutes away in a very rural area and love it.

I just happened to check the boards today to see what was going on; pre-meds are waiting to hear about interviews, August MCAT takers are nervous as heck, applications are getting lost in the mail, dreams are being fulfilled/shattered, etc etc blah blah. So anyway, as a first year at OU I would seriously beg that everyone relatively interested in OUCOM don't be put off by the whole 5 year thing. I don't blame them for instituting it, personally. Go to the OOA (Ohio Osteopathic Association) website and you'll see that there is a huge campaign in Ohio called "Way are all the good doctors leaving Ohio?" Malpractice is a big issue in this state; esp in NE Ohio where surgeons, particularly, pay out the wazoo for malpractice insurance... and that can make for a pretty inflamed wazoo after a couple of years. Also, OUCOM does a big service to Ohio by graduating a good percentage of Ohio primary care docs, specifically in SE Ohio. If you have absolutely no desire to live in Ohio, then I can understand. But if you don't care where you end up, then give Ohio a chance; you might like it. If anything, you do an IM residency: bam, 4 1/2 years off of the five year commitment, see if you can get the last six months waved and go where the wind blows to practice or do fellowship work. We live 80 years, 90 if we're blessed with that... 5 years isn't a huge chunk of time. Do an AOA residency here and get time knocked off of that. I mean, I know we don't have a Massachusetts General Hospital here, but we still have great programs that train very competent physicians and surgeons. And beyond that, OUCOM is a very well respected program in Ohio amongst practicing physicians.

To the OP: I loved all the plasma screens the first time I saw them, I love them even more now that I have been using them... epsecially in the Gross Lab.

P.S. My wife and I live in The Plains, OH: 5 minutes to Athens and we're on the med school side of the city. You couldn't PAY me to live in downtown Athens once the undergrads come back from summer. Besides, too much of a distraction.
