Hey everyone,

two of my friends and I are going to be visiting Nova and Ft. Lauderdale on August 10th - 14th. We've already set up to meet with a doctor at the dental school and take a tour Friday, but we wanted some advice on other things to do in Ft. Lauderdale. We will definitely hit the beach...we're all san Diegans, and surfers, so the beach isn't a big mystery, but I was wondering if any floridians or Nova students knew anything about these things:

1) which beaches are fun?

2) where's the good nightlife in Ft. Lauderdale?

3) are the hostels safe? or should we opt for a hotel?

4) Any good places to eat we MUST try?

5) anyone at Nova have a big pad and a big house we crash on the floors at...even just a couple days so we have to pay less hotel costs?

6) any other suggestions on things to do?

thanks for any responses.

I've been there before and let me say the night life is crazy and all the beaches are amazing. You are in north miami, you take a cab 15 mins to miami and you are right on the strip with about 100 bars and 100 good places to eat, with a beach that runs along the whole coast

1) which beaches are fun? To check out ladies, Ft. Lauderdale Beach is just fine, be sure to go the the beach area where it is directly right across the street from the "Beach Place" (a place with shops and restaurants). If y'all have a car, then South Beach is a must see as well.

2) where's the good nightlife in Ft. Lauderdale? Downtown Ft. Lauderdale is kind of dying down since the Hard Rock opened. I highly recommend the Hard Rock Cafe (Seminoles Casino) in Hollywood. It's not the casino part that I want you to see, it's the clubs and bars at this entertainment complex that you must experience. This place has everything and every flavor of night life! I would go to Hard Rock before downtown Fort Lauderdale (aka RiverFront).

3) are the hostels safe? or should we opt for a hotel? Don't know about Hostels, but since they are 3 of you, sharing a hotel room could be affordable.

4) Any good places to eat we MUST try?

Do y'all like sushi? There are these two all-you-can eat sushi places that we go weekly! For $15, all the sashimi you can eat! One of them is called Sushi Takara and the other is called Makinos. Both are in the same neighborhood on University Drive, just north of Oakland BLVD. (20 minutes north of dental school or 20 minutes west of beach)

5) anyone at Nova have a big pad and a big house we crash on the floors at...even just a couple days so we have to pay less hotel costs?

Shoot, I just left NSU CDM or else you fools are more than welcome to crash with me. Y'all are on your own on this one. But what I would suggest is to contact some current students on SDN here so your group can meet up with some of them. Some NSU CDM stud dudes to contact on SDN are:

jmjfb23 (2nd year)
JRogoff (3rd year)

6) any other suggestions on things to do?
1) after your tour to the dental school, stick around and find current dental students to chat (you'll usually find dnetal students chilling at these two benches right outside of the dental building, chat with them)
2) after the tour, go introduce yourself to the admissions director, Su-Ann Zarrett
3) Sunday night (8/13) you fools have to go to the club called Nikki Beach at South Miami Beach, it's off the hook! Sunday nights are their big nights. Ladies there are freaking gorgeous! Get there early (before 11:30 PM) so you don't have to wait in long lines for hours. This place is very expensive, get ready to drop some doe.

4) that same weekend is the first weekend of the fall semester, there should be a ton of parties. There these bars called the Ale House and Gatsbys right on University Drive by the dental school where a lot of dental students will hang out at, go check it out on Thursday and/or Friday nights. It's ladies night on Thursday nights at the Ale House! Again, it wouldn't hurt to contact current dental students to make plans to meet up or to join a party! Get ahold of those two dudes I listed above, they'll set y'all up. Tell them Andy send you.

thanks for any responses

awesome..thanks for the info.

We're gonna stay on in a hostel right across from the beach in Ft. Lauderdale Beach, and I'll definitely check out Hard Rock!

When you get back let us know how that hostel is, I would like to stay in one instead of a hotel when I go down for an interview (if I get one).
