I am visiting OSU COM on Monday, March 24 at 1:00 pm. for a tour with a student ambassador and to talk with admissions. Maybe I'll see some of you there.

I wouldn't do well in law school. I am warm blooded, I like garlic, and I am not afraid of crosses. 😀

Besides, if I were to chase ambulances, it would be to help injured people, not to pit them against each other for my own profit. 😉

I'm back from my visit. I had fun, although I did not have enough time to do a lot. Tulsa was a nice place to visit. I wouldn't mind living there. My tour of OSU COM was interesting. All of the students, faculty, and staff there were very friendly and informative. DrMom came by to meet me, too. Thanks, DrMom, for being there to welcome me, I'm sorry I didn't get to talk long, I was kind of led around and had a lot to pay attention to in order to get my questions satisfied.
All in all, it was a great experience and I can't wait until my next visit when I begin my applications process.

Does Dr. Mom or anyone else have an understanding of the residency determination for matriculants?

Who makes the residency decisions in OK?

I have lived in Tulsa for 24 of my 37 years, and was born in the pink palace when it was only two stories. I moved for work reasons last spring to Texas. I have paid taxes in OK for 10 or 11 years and owned two homes in T-town.

I know that I might have to re-establish residency to get instate tuition. I would hope that a case could be made for resident status given my history.

While I hate all of the "what are my chances" threads, I am really looking for information as to who decides residency issues and maybe some idea of whether residency is a gray area that can be evaluated (preferably prior to application review!).

Obviously, I have significant ties to OK like family, career history, etc. Thanks for your input.

Also, can OSU COM tours be arranged on a Saturday? I expect weekdays only, but wanted to ask anyway. I am trying to save my vacation days for actual interviews.

You would have to reinstate residency. You really should PM Idiopathic about this. He used to live in OKC, but moved to TX for a while & is counted as out-of-state.

I don't know of any saturday tours, but you can always get ahold of me & I can take you around & talk with you. Feel free to PM me.

DrMom - I know this is a little late (sorry, just finished OChem II finals - WooHoo - wound up with A's in both OChem semesters. Happy feet, happy feet, happy feet) but if you've got some time....

I've noticed that OSU COM REQUIRES a letter from a DO. I'm working on that now with the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association. Should I not be able to get one due to HIPAA, will they cut some slack on that if I beg/plead/bribe with McDonald's Happy Meals or is it set in stone?

Also, I don't know how to find out what programs the different schools are known for, so I thought I'd ask. What does OSU COM do best?

Is there a place where I can lay my grubby paws on a catalog or info packet?

Anyway, how much longer are you there? Some of my wife's relatives live/work in Tulsa and Renfro, OK. so we're up there all the time (although not as frequently lately). If I get a chance and it works out, I may come up and visit later on this year since I'll be applying there also.....

OSU does require the DO letter. HIPAA shouldn't make a difference...if you sign a confidentiality form there should be no problems.

OSU is known for family medicine and rural medicine, although we have lots of specialists out of here.

definitely play this up on your interview. my connections to OK were few, but the ones i had i emphasized. especially for out of state applicants, i think it makes you more "attractive" to the school.

That's what I thought also (in terms of the confidentiality agreement), but virtually all of the MD/DOs I've talked with (including the family pediatrician who said he had no problem with a LOR but shadowing was a different story) always mention HIPAA restrictions. Maybe I should ask if they can sign me to secrecy 😱

Anyway, I called the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association and I've been in contact with a local D.O. who I'm going to be meeting with next week. He mentioned a 'modified' shadowing situation, so we may be good there.
