Hey Friends,

I’m a 34 yo non trad starting at Marshall University JCESOM next month. I started college as a 30 yo freshman (completed it in 3 years) and in my gap year have completed 30/45 credits of my MPH. Prior to entering my academic journey I had a different career and before that I experienced some mental health issues and ended up on SSDI. Due to my eligibility through SSDI, I have been utilizing Vocational Rehabilitation benefits for many years (for training for my prior career and during undergrad). I just got word from my counselor that VR anticipates paying my full tuition, associated fees, and books (~68k per year). They are also requesting financial assistance to cover some of my living expenses. I have not come across anyone else who has gone this route with med school. I think part of it is that it is generally uncommon for folks in my situation to earn professional degrees, but I also think there is some lack of knowledge within the disability community that this is, indeed, a path.
If there is anyone else out there who has gone through this, I’d love to hear your story. And if there are any folks (non trad or otherwise) who are interested in learning more, I’d love to answer questions to the best of my ability.
Being a member of the disability community and non trad community has been really wild — there is a lot of discrimination and there is a lot to really celebrate too.
