Vodka anyone?

best vodka I ever had was this stuff my friend Katya would get from a little Russian market when we were living in the Czech Republic. I have no idea what brand it was (can't read the cyrillic alphabet) but it was freakin amazing. Totally smooth, could barely feel the alcohol going down when it was chilled.

drink it Russian style, with a pitcher of vodka in the middle of the table and tumbler glasses. chilled with NO ice. fill your glass then sip it, no shooting. Put out some caviar, bread, rama spread... good stuff, seems like another lifetime from now.

btw, in the states, you can't really go wrong with Smirnoff. There isn't THAT much difference between the overall taste of a properly made mid-shelf vodka like Smirnoff and a top-shelf like Belvedere/Chopin, etc. just my opinion of course.. I haven't found enough reasons to justify spending so much more for a fancy bottle.

stay away from the ones in the plastic bottles and u should be fine

Believe it or not, Kirkland brand at Costco is actually pretty damn good.

I'm not kidding.

Did you ever try this?

I now know why people in the Czech Republic are so tough.

Try Cirroc.....it has Flavor...like bourbon....but not the cheesy added flavors that Absolut adds to some of their selections.

Becherovka is some harsh **** man, not really vodka though. Actually I had some pretty good mixed drinks made with it in Prague (one with a shot of bech, a shot of absinthe and some other stuff, that night ended up being pretty messed up). For my money, though, Ketel One is top-notch. So smooth, with better flavor than grey goose, belverdere, etc. Level is pretty good, but overpriced imo. I haven't had Cirroc, but everything Diddy touches turns to crap anyway, so I wouldn't expect too much out of it.

I had a sip of Vodka once. It burned my throat like hell. Never again.

hah, yeah I drank a bit of becherovka while I was over there. The Czechs are more likely to drink Fernet stock (it's about the same thing but less known so it's cheaper). It's a good mixer but I wouldn't recommend trying to drink a lot of it.... it's an herbal liquour so it was actually first brewed not as smooth sippin booze but as a tonic to aid digestion.

One thing, that stuff is NASTY when warm. I remember passing a bottle back and forth with a friend walking around the street (totally legal there btw) and it wasn't so tasty but if you take it home and chill it and drink just a bit it's not so bad.

I used to drink smirnoff for years until I started getting hangovers. Maybe its because I'm older who knows. Yeah its cheap, but honestly "upper shelf" vodka gives me a lot weaker hangover.

I think the best vodka for the money is Svedka. Its costs about the same as smirnoff (although it looks way more expensive), no hangover, and it goes down very very smooth. I actually like it better than goose or kettle one. Got love those Swedes.

Kettle one.

Kettle one. I remember that stuff. It is good. With the onset of Wisconsin winter, I decided to get a handle of Smirnoff Vodka (Good middle of the pack vodka for a med student budget). Milwaukee's weather is probably pretty comparable to Moscow.

Have you guys ever had this stuff.

My brother in law likes this stuff. I remember have shots of this at my brother-in-law's house with him and his russian buddy. We would take a shot and have a bite of pickle, apparently that is a Russian way to drink. We had American pickles though, instead of the Russian kind which are prepared differently.

Can't believe no one has mentioned this...

I can make a mean dirty vodka Martini with this stuff. VERY mean. :meanie:

By the way, CWB and turkeyjerky, my trip to Prague was incredible. I had near-perfect weather at the end of September. We went all over the city. It was dirt cheap, the people were incredibly nice, the women were phenomenal looking, and I all-around had an awesome time.

It was there I learned the story about the Anheiser and Busch family(ies) stealing the Budvar beer recipe (google it), subsequently naming it Budweiser, and thereby making a fortune. Of course, I drank a lot of Pilsner-Urquell when I was there. The local wines were terrible, by the way (the Czechs haven't figured out how to make good wine, I guess).

I highly recommend a trip to this city for anyone who's never been. You gotta go there, and the southern coast of Portugal (the Algarve region). Two amazing places. I did it them in separate trips. Brussels was amazing as well.

Yeah man, Prague was amazing. When we backpacked through europe we had panned to stay there overnight budapest and germany, but liked it so much we stayed a whole week.

Three Olives is pretty good.

I guess it probably doesn't matter considering I mix it all with cranberry juice.

i watched a tv program that had 8 or so religious Grey Goose drinkers who refused to drink anything else. Then they made different drinks and had a taste test. More than a few picked Grey Goose as the worst tasting drink of them all. Which means that, at least in this small study, most people are buying it because it's expensive...not because it actually tastes better.

Most vodka's to me are the same, honestly.

I think I saw that as well. People who SWORE by certain vodka brands frequently picked the rotgut.

I believe the term is conspicuous consumption. Errr, no pun intended. 🙂

You have to separate yourself from the slime. Whether or not it makes sense.

Agree.
Actually the best Vodka is the one with the least taste (some call it smooth) which allows you to get drunk before getting nauseous.

I thought Prague was absolutely amazing and I hope that I can go back there one day. Everything was dirt cheap, the architecture was amazing, people were friendly. I could prattle on and on about that fantastic city.

I don't really get the vodka thing. If I want to drink something that doesn't taste like something, I prefer water. I used to drink it a lot in high school before I learned to enjoy rum, whiskey, gin, etc., and was just looking for a quick way to get drunk.

I don't think I could justify buying anything more expensive than Monopolowa or Staraya Moskva, which I use when making vodka drinks for others. My girlfriend's famliy is from Russia, and even they prefer drinking cognac to vodka.

I like zubrowka, which is the original flavored vodka - flavored with "bison grass."

Agree.

By that standard I recommend Spirytus Rektyfikowany, which is 192 proof, not available in the USA, and probably intended for making your own vodka or flavored spirits. Essentially zero flavor, because there's really no room for anything but EtOH.

The instant it enters your mouth, it sucks the moisture out of your tongue and cheeks by osmosis. Enough alcohol is absorbed by your oral mucosa for instant drunkenness. I have not dared to try this in ten years.

Vodka seems a like a drink that exists just to make you get messed up. Had some tonight before going to a bucks vs celtics game. Felt pretty messed up in the first quarter before I had some nachos to soak up the alcohol.

Lot of people here buy into the fancy label mentality. Sad.

I don't know what this "Kettle One" stuff is, but I can tell you KETEL ONE is hard to beat.

Reyka is good, but for the price, Ketel One is better.

Had this wicked stuff in Denmark called Danska. Can get it here, but it has a lower alcohol content.

I lived in Russia for a while, and it was fun to discover each region had it's own vodka distillery. Wow, they make some good stuff over there.

smooth. chilled neat, or on the rocks.

I'll second this. I was a huge Kettle One fan until my friend's dad introduced me to Hangar One. Exceptional on the rocks, or in a proper martini.

Isn't the Reyka cheaper than Ketel One?

Reyka is $23 here.

Probably the best vodka I have ever had is, Jean Marc:
http://www.jmxo.com/

There is a very intriguing taste to it. One of my partners gave this for Xmas gifts last year.

Another partner and I spent some time last winter in an old ski hut drinking this vodka. My partner doesn't drink all that much but after a full day of backcountry skiing we finished the whole bottle and still felt great the next morning.

Australia's not exactly the first place I think of in regards to vodka. But hey, if it's good.

They make great wines, right?
This comes from one of their vineyards.
Here's a write up: Another grape-based vodka has been announced. Foster's Wine Estates (the company behind a wide variety of wines from Penfolds to the Little Penguin) is selling Boomerang Vodka, the first 100 percent grape-based vodka imported from Australia. The grapes are Chardonnay grapes from the Barossa Valley and the vodka is five times distilled, charcoal filtered and bottled close to its source in South Australia. The 750 ml bottle is priced at $19.99 and will be available nationwide beginning in late October. It's certainly cheaper than the Bocaj vodka we saw the other day. The Aussie-centric label seems to send the message that this is the Yellowtail of vodka, a cheap and safe choice.

went to a small get-together last night and opened up my bottle of Level and was pleasantly surprised. It's Absolut's "premium" label, so I was suspicious at first, but it was worthy of drinking over ice, no mixer. A couple of vodka-wary guests tried it and liked it as well.
