Hi everyone,

I am currently working on my BS degree in Bio with a cummulative GPA of 3.5. I am looking to graduate in the Fall of 09 and plan to begin application in the summer 09 to hopefully gain acceptance for 2010.

I work in a retail pharmacy (PTCB certified) with two years experience. However, i don't have any EC or volunteer acctivities to show in my application. So, I am thinking of volunteering. Can you suggest any setting would be "preffered" by the schools. Any sort of information regarding volunteering/EC activities will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Good you posted this up, because I had the same question, but my guess is volunteer at a library, church, shelters etc...
I was planning on volunteering at the RedCross or something like once a week when I get to my senior year of my undergrad.

do some searching on this... I usually tell people to volunteer in a hospital pharmacy but since you already have pharmacy experience thats probably not necessary. I don't think they prefer one type of volunteering over the other. And this what most other people on here will tell you. Volunteer where you want to volunteer. If you like kids volunteer with kids, animals? - try a public zoo, or a hospital is easy to volunteer at too. They just want you to show service to the community in whatever way you choose. And you need to show dedication to volunteer by staying with the same place for as long as you can. They will notice if you volunteered somewhere for just one month for something to put on you app. Volunteer where you want and stay there for a while

Iconcur, do you think once a week for a year is good? I dont want to do the bare minimum because i volunteer all the time, but none of it is logged in....dang it....

I didn't "log" any of my volunteer time.. the only school that asked me anything close to "prove it" was in the form of asking for a contact name/email for all activities (and as far as I know.. none of them were actually contacted).

As for what type, basically anything where you're working with others or for others; the important part is what you learn (aka what you tell them) about it. Some schools may also like to see some sort of "leadership" if you can score it as well.

Thank you all for the helpful advice.
I am a member of the Tropical Medicine Association of Washington(TMAW). Speaking of "leadership", I have worked as a supervisor at a retail store. is that the kind of "leadership" that you were suggesting?

What do you mean leadership? Like president of some school club?
Like what?

Like president, or chair, or coordinator.. "in charge" of things or people or a project.. I don't think it's the be-all end-all but it's another one of those perks for your application.

I've been asked about non-academic activities I take part in... so try going for something more rounded. If you enjoy being outdoors, Habitat for Humanity is a pretty interesting experience. Local youth groups and churches offer great opportunities to contribute to your "overall life experience."
