I need to write an essay for an application to a volunteer program, and decided to talk about the exposure I've had to the medical system throughout my life (my parents and I have a few health issues.) There was a time when we didn't have any healthcare and I had to take care of any problems that may have needed the assistance of an ER. One particular incident where my mother seriously wounded her leg comes to mind--I cleaned and wrapped the wound as well as I could, and a year or so later her doctor commented how well the leg looked and assumed a doctor had taken care of the wound. He was floored when she told him the truth.

Should I mention this in my essay? I feel it shows off my competency at learning quickly and performing well under pressure, but I don't know how hospitals view individuals handling issues that should have been handled by doctors, all because they didn't have healthcare at the time. Any thoughts are appreciated. 😍

i would want to read this in the context of the experince. i think medical - practice may be seen as bragging but it COULD be effectively used to convey the skills or characteristics you are trying to convey. depends on the emphasis on the situation in leiu of the entire essay ..as well as word choice and organization..feel free to Pm it to me this afternoon if you like.

good luck.
