You can always seek volunteer positions at Coler Goldwater Hospital which is where I used to work. Its based on Roosevelt Island and they always look for volunteer. It is a great place to work and you get exposed to things there you would not normally see elsewhere. Try contacting their volunteer department.

I think the Pavers program is now the year round extension of the summer Project Healthcare program. (I might be wrong) If so then it is mainly in Bellevue's emergency department. It is always busy in there and so they always need people. Usually involves a lot of transporting patients to and from radiology, running to the pharmacy for meds, sometimes just chatting with patients while they wait. I know that in Project Healthcare they teach you how to perform 12 lead EKG's for the doctors. Being in Bellevue is great since it is always busy and it is a teaching hospital. Therefore if you are enthusiastic and show it most residents will include you on procedures and talk to you about it. I think this also gives you a good idea of whether or not you feel comfortable in high pressure settings.
