For anyone that has volunteered in a pharmacy setting, who did you contact? I've contacted two local hospitals but haven't had much luck. Do you have any other advice?

Also, are schools happy to see other volunteer work also, or must it be in the pharmacy field?

You should get your work/volunteer experience in pharmacy settings for schools to consider it as experience. Try volunteering at a retail/chain like Sav-On's, Rite-Aid, Walgreens, etc or even working there as a clerk. Just go to any pharmacy and ask the pharmacy manager if they have any positions open 👍

I disagree that you HAVE to volunteer in a pharmacy. While you should try to at least shadow a pharmacist I think any volunteer experience is a plus for your application.

That being said, I did volunteer in a hospital pharmacy. I started checking out the hospital websites. There many list what sort of volunteer positions they have to offer. But, if they don't offer one in pharmacy it doesn't hurt to explain why you would like to volunteer in the pharmacy and ask.

I say

1) shadow a pharmacist... maybe if they are impressed, they will hire you.
2) apply to be a pharmacy clerk, etc.
3) volunteer in ANY health related place.. hospital - be a candy striper!
4) Call all and any pharmacy willing to listen to you - scratch that! Visit any pharmacy... submit an application online or at the store... dress snazzy!

I know some universities have student organizations that are mainly pharmacy oriented. At UT, we have LPPA and UT-ASP so if there's a pharmacy or pre-pharmacy organization at your school, definitely check it out.

That's how I got my position at South Austin Hospital. That day, one of the officers listed a phone number because SAH needed more volunteers and first, I emailed the coordinator. She said that there weren't any more positions available and to apply later. Being the persistent kid that I am, I went up to the hospital myself and filled out an application just so they'd know I was truly serious about working there. Within 2 weeks, I got a position RIGHT square in the pharmacy. I didn't even have to push wheelchairs!

I'd suggest that you go to the hospital in person and meet with the coordinater (set up a meeting first) to demonstrate how serious you are. Only through working in a Pharmacy will you know if it's the right thing for you. Very often, I've heard people tell me that it's boring etc. so if it's not for you, better to find out early then late.

I think experience in any Pharmacy setting will win you major points. It doesn't necessarilly matter if you're a Pharm. Tech or just a volunteer, provided you're exposed to the setting and actually DO volunteer work. Sometimes, you might get lucky and then you can pre-pack!

One of the local hospitals just returned my call and told me that I could volunteer at the hospital pharmacy. That will be good!

Sorry. I guess it does look like it... haha. I bet you're going to be surprised.. it's actually Taylor Hanson (of Hanson) and his first child, a son named Ezra. But I love the picture. I know you're prolly surprised they are still around but they are and making pretty good music too! Hanson's website If you watch, there's a flash on the opening page... it plays a pretty catchy song called "Lost Without Each Other" I guarantee that you won't be able to sit still through it. Sorry about my endless plug for Hanson.. 😍 just want people to know they are still making great music.. non of the mmmbop crap!
