Hello Everyone!
I did some research about good things to do during my gap year. I want to focus on my ECs and studying for the MCAT. Seriously lacking in ECs! I noticed a lot of people talking about working as a medical scribe, which I spent today applying for. So many companies popped up when I googled it! I applied to EMSS. Considering that there are so many I was wondering if some had a higher placement rate with hospitals in the Bay Area (I'm from California). Is it bad to apply to too many? I'm thinking of applying to Scribeamerica tomorrow.
I worked at a student clinic for two years while I went to school. I'm wondering if this is enough clinic experience. I mostly did receptionist work, data entry/record keeping and handled prep, stocking and inventory of medical supplies. I did get to watch a few minor surgeries when the right doctor was on shift. 😉
There's a hospital in my hometown that has a research assistant position which I'm interested in, but I'm wondering if this counts more as research experience instead of volunteer work. Should I look into a different volunteer position? I noticed a lot of people volunteered at hospitals. I did that for a while when I was a sophomore and I didn't get too much out of it. The nurses just had me sit at a desk and told me to do my homework. I did answer the phone. Haha, they were awesome though.
I was also looking into hospice volunteer work. They want 4 hours a week which is pretty doable. On average how much volunteer work a week do you guys do?
Is it safe to assume anything I do that I don't get paid for is considered volunteer work regardless of what it is? What would you guys recommend to spice up my ECs?
Thanks for the help! 😀
