I have been teaching immigrants to speak English as a second language but I did not do it at the community service or something organized. I helped them out because they are from the same country I am from, they needed help with English and I offered to help. So I tutored at home one on one. I was thinking of writing a small paragraph about it for one of my secondaries; but I am a little confused, because I don?t know if this qualifies as community service or not.
Any ideas?

Yes, of course it does. You're willingness to put your hands to the work that appeared demonstrates initiative, creativity, and organizational ability. That you did it outside the context of an organized group is even more impressive; it doesn't look like you woke up one morning, said "I need some ECs for my medical school application," and looked through the yellow pages. You saw a problem that inspired you, and acted. You even invited people into the privacy of your home to tutor them. Bravo!

Now, as far as how to list it -- I'd list it as a community service activity, and stress in the write-up how much initiative you took. If there's enough room, the reasons you had for beginning your service might be compelling.

Just knowing what I do from your post, you're the type of doctor I would want to go see -- so make sure it goes in your application. What passion! What generosity!
