Alright so i'm a bio major at SMU in dallas texas. Im taking the fall semester off because they dont offer bio 2 and chem 2 in the fall. Therefore, I have wait until the spring semester. There's nothing really for me to take because ive already finished all my gen ed requirements. I work at a hotel and in uptown and a couple of weeks ago i meet one of the best neuro-surgeons here in dallas. I told him I was studying pre-med and he told me that I have to spend some time with him when preparing for the MCAT. He said he was top 10 in his class and that he could show me how to masterr it. He also told me that he'd write my letters of recommendation and get me into any med school i wanted to go to. Now i understand he was being a little sarcastic about getting me into any school but you never know lol. But yeah I asked him if i could volunteer for him and he said listen you can operate with me if you want. So he gave me his phone number and tipped me $100. So what do you guys suggest I do? I am going to call him but will working with him make me a stand out candidate when applying to med schools?

Wow! Sounds like a great opportunity. I'd completely go for it because I'm sure it's not going to hurt your chances. I also wonder how the "name dropping" stuff goes when it comes to who you shadow. One of the doctors I may be working with is Dr Michael Sorrell, UNMC's COM is named after him, lol...so maybe if he writes me a LOR I'll have a better chance at getting into UNMC.

It seems like knowing someone is great because it gets your foot in the door. I'd definately call him if I were you. Right away, lol. 🙂 gl and have fun!

Just wondering... How is a neurosurgeon who graduated medical school 10+ years ago going to help you study for the MCAT? Don't get me wrong, the shadowing and LOR sounds great but the other stuff sounds a little weird.

Shadowing opportunity is great, but it all sounds kind of sketchy in retrospect (ie- how will hee retain half of the stuff from the MCAT in his memory from such a long time ago?).

It doesn't matter if he took it 10 years ago, Im pretty sure he still has some really good tips for me.

Doubtful. You really think an attending neurosurgeon (that's 4 years of medical school + 7 years of residency + however many years he has been an attending) has understanding of the MCAT, including courses which he hasn't taken in over a decade (probably two, at that)? Look at the changes that the MCAT has had over the years. Why don't you ask him for some help on the SAT also?

I smell a troll.

lists several too-good-to-be-true helpful opportunities... ends post asking if it will help him at all

TROLLOLOLOL

How do you even know if someone is a "top 10" neuro-surgeon anyway?
Do you just have a list of neuro-surgeons in Dallas ranked by dexterity/patient survival/recovery rate? Or does the surgeon immediately introduce himself as "Hi, I'm a top 10 neuro-surgeon in Dallas!" ?
Maybe I'm just less acquainted with the medical field or have less connections than some pre-meds, but either way, that kind of sounds weird to me.

you pre-med students on here are all just a bunch of HATERS
im going to be ****ting on you guys when im in med school and your going to be like **** how did he make it 🙂

OP, i have some questions:
1) Is said neurosurgeon a male?
2) Are you a good looking girl?

Question answered. All shred of doubt that this wasn't a troll went out the window with this post. Take a couple upper div trolling classes at SMU, that should offset the "prestige" issue you seem to have with the school.
