Hey guys,

I am thinking that I want to start volunteering with the salvation army. They have many roles varying from organization of produce, to driving delivery truck, to administrative work. Is there one specific job I want to stay away from? (For example: I know at the hospital you don't want to be working in the gift shop).

Why do you want to volunteer for this organization? Really, why? Are you truly passionate about the mission of the Salvation Army, or is just a good volunteer gig that came up and will let you check a box on your application?

I'm not being condescending, nor do I believe you are not sincere... but those questions are really important questions to ask yourself whenever you are thinking about beginning a new activity (not to mention you will be asked that in interviews).

If you really care about something and it helps you better relate to the human condition then there is no such thing as a "bad" volunteer activity. Hospital gift shops could be a wonderful place to volunteer... you would get to interact with and perhaps even comfort those who are ill and suffering--both patients and their families.

Any of the SA roles sounds like it could be a good experience. Do whatever you feel drawn to.

Pick a role that you find interesting that will make your volunteering experience even more worthwhile.

Agreed with this. It's not the experience but what you personally get out of it that's important.

Having said that, it's also nice to get interactions with a variety of people during volunteer experiences, including those who actually will receive the help from the SA.
