is there a cap for how many volunteering hours I should aim for before applying?

or is it a more the merrier type thing.

So far, I've volunteering for ~20 hours total throughout my semesters. I just finished my sophomore year. I'm only taking 1 class this summer so planned on racking up hours instead.

I'll be taking Orgo II in the fall, so instead of DAT prep I'd like to improve my application this way.

Shadowing wise, have shadowed a few dentists for around 20 hours also. My father has a practice, so I've been a chairside assistant on the weekends for a few months now too.

Exactly, the more the merrier. They want to see you involved in things, whether they are ECs, community service, research etc etc. Some schools DO place an emphasis on volunteering while others could care less. But definitely get 100 shadowing hours. Most importantly, keep your grades up!

thanks.

Back in my dual credit HS program (graduated with 85 Credits) - I received the President's award for 100 volunteering hours. Would I be able to put that on the application considering i kind of started my postsecondary education at that time?

thanks.

I honestly do not have much input on that. You may want advice from someone else. I have read that if there was something significant you did during HS that had a large impact on you then you should include it. Others say that you should never include anything from HS on your app, but discuss it only in your PS so it can be a strong talking point during your interviews. I am also torn, like you, because I have an EC from HS that was pretty unique/influential. I have a few weeks to figure out if I should include it or not.

AADSAS asks for hours that have been completed AFTER high school. If you want to highlight volunteer work in your PS, you could include it there, but not with only 20 hours in college. You would want to put in a LOT more hours if that is your plan.
