Medical Volunteering in a Refugee Camp Abroad OK?

I have the opportunity to volunteer in refugee camps abroad with a reputable NGO. Are all volunteer opportunities of this nature considered medical tourism and frowned upon, considered “bad”, and should not be mentioned? I have direct connection to the population due to my background.

If you want to do it and you have a good reason, go for it. Just don't lean on it as a major aspect of your application.

If it is worthwhile and meaningful to you, that's fine. It is not "clinical experience" but since you are working with a valid NGO, no red flags should be raised.

Do it because it’s something good to do.

Don’t do any unauthorized medical treatment.

Do it if it is something that you would enjoy doing and for sure mention it in your app. That being said, you ALSO need clinical experiences in the states.
