Volunteering/shadowing

I'm a pre-dental and want to get my clinical hours out of the way and I'm having a bit of confusion-- what's the difference between volunteering and shadowing?? Do I need both? If not, which is more important. I understand that if you're volunteering it's much easier to end up shadowing along the way, but it isn't as easy to find areas to volunteer for dentistry in my opinion. Can I have some advice? Thanks.

Shadowing a general dentist is a must. After that, shadow specialists if that interests you.
Volunteering is a boon to your app but it doesn't need to be dental volunteering.
