My nephew is applying for dental school next summer and needs to get some volunteering hours done this year. Back in my day, I got in with virtually no volunteering hours but it sounds like things are more competitive today.

What are the best places to volunteer for your dental school application? He is in the Houston area, btw. How many hours do you need?

Also, he coaches a summer 7 on 7 football team as a volunteer and has probably put in more than 200 hours doing that the last three summers but I told him that probably is not the kind of volunteering you should put on your application. Is this something you guys would put on your app?

From what i've heard, you should put all volunteer work on the application, and coaching would be a great thing to include! I would recommend he gets involved with some sort of dental clinic or non profit organization, maybe both, and then stay committed to that organization for the next year. It looks better on an application to have 3-4 key experience that have a good amount of hours, rather than volunteering randomly at a lot of different places. It shows that you have commitment to something and the ability show up consistently.

Texas Mission of Mercy has an event coming up this weekend in Austin. These are great events where predentals help dentist serve hundreds of patients over the course of two days. Shifts are like 5 hrs at a time. Most people will volunteer for 1 or 2 shifts.

Texas Mission of Mercy.

I highly recommend these volunteer events!!!

There is a Texas Mission of Mercy? Thats so cool! I've been to the 2017 and 2018 Florida Mission of Mercy and its one of the main experiences that solidified my desire to be a dentist. Thats really awesome to hear!

Have him look into Remote Area Medical (RAM). They have mobile clinics that stop in Texas occasionally, and I enjoy volunteering with them. It's a good way to get 20+ hours in a weekend or over the span of a few days.
