I have been searching around on these forums looking for an answer to my question, but all the threads I find do not seem to deal with my specific problem. If anyone can find a thread that resolves this issue please point it out for me 😀.

Anyway, I am going to be taking a science tutoring position but I do not know whether it would be better to take it as a volunteer or an employee. Assuming that money is not a factor which is looked upon more favorably on a med school app? I would like to assume that volunteering would be better, but I am just not sure if that is a correct assumption or not.

Pretty straightforward question hope you all have some answers for me lol. 🙄

If you are asking if you should do the work for free because you think it will make adcoms think you are noble the answer is no. Science tutoring is science tutoring and you would be an idiot to turn the money down.

Turning down money to look a saint is not going to get you into medical school. Try harder. OTOH, you need to do some volunteering somewhere. You might be better off doing your volunteering as a clinical experience, though, since getting paid clinical experience as a premed tends to be quite difficult (at least at first -- if you get your CNA or EMT-B, volunteer for 6 mos, and then apply somewhere, your chances are almost certainly better after those 6 mos volunteering and learning on the job than they would have been had you applied for a clinical job straight out after getting licensed/certified).

Tutoring fo sho 👍👍

I'm a student interviewer for my school, and I can tell you that I'm not impressed by volunteer work unless you organized it or take on a leadership position.

I'm even more impressed if you're a volunteer tutor... that is, on top of being a paid tutor (that way I know people are willing to pay for your quality services and that you're a nice person who's willing to give away your quality service from time to time). Extra bonus points if you're in a leadership position in the organization.

Hmmm interesting responses. I guess I should have clarified that I am not looking to be more "noble" or a "saint," but I see that it looks that way now that I look back on my own question. I see your all points and I suppose it makes sense to get my volunteer experience from clinical/hospital setting. So thank you all for the helpful responses 🙂
