Besides the pharmacy setting, what other types of volunteering might appeal to pharmacy school admissions committees?

Salaam khanom,

Pretty much anything you can do will count in your favor, including Salvation Army, Red Cross, Loaves and Fishes, etc. The higher your place in the totem pole, the better, of course (e.g. buzz words like coordinator, leader, director, co-directory).

Pharmacy experience is, granted, the best. But any volunteer is good. Remember you want to focus on leadership too.

I volunteer at a free clinic for adults who are uninsured. I work in the dispensary there - which really allows me to put my knowledge of pharmacy into practice. I also help the patients obtain medications through drug manufacturer's patient assist programs. This volunteer work really looked great on my application, and definitely helped me get in. You should check to see if there is a free clinic in your town.

The more you do, the more positive attention you bring to your resume and application. Free clinics are great to get first hand experience, just be careful about which clinics you choose and if what they're doing at the clinics is what you're comfortable with.
