Hi all!

What are the benefits to working at Target & Vons? Which one is better suited for a pharmacy intern? Which one is better for the future? Why should I choose one over the other? I hope insiders or anyone who knows will share your opinions with me. Please don't simply tell me if one sucks and move on.

(If you have worked at either places, tips for the interviews and questions are appreciated too).

Thank you very much!

Target sucks. Don't go to work there. They don't invest in their pharmacies. Ancient computer system. You have to answer to the dumb store manager. You are just another department the manager has to deal with. It's very unprofessional there.Movin on.

Vons is owned by Safeway the CVS of the grocery world. If Safeway survives another 5 years I will be amazed.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Target pull out of the pharmacy business. They have done it before.

My advice.....stay out of retail. The future is bleak.

Any news on Safeway? I saw a job posting for pharmacist the other day.

Just out of curiosity, why do you think Target would potentially leave the Rx business? Or actually why any major retailer would. Not questioning you, just wondering.

I wouldn't know too much about the future in pharmacies, but tbh, I have done my IPPE and now my APPE at Target (two different stores) and think it is a good pharmacy experience, better than many other chains I have heard. My roommate also interns at Target and she seems pretty happy there. It is a nice store, and as far as I've seen, the pharmacists really pay attention to the customers, even for non-pharmacy needs. Also, the non-pharmacy staff seems quite friendly.

I'm not a huge fan of retail, but any other positions you would suggest? Hospital? Clinical? I'm even looking into fellowships even though the thought of not being around patients sounds like something I was initially not interested in, but who knows.

I've been working for Target for 2 years. Most Target pharmacies throughout the company actually generate no profit for the store as a whole. The pharmacy is merely there to increase foot traffic in the store to help store sales. Only now is the pharmacy leadership realizing with a little bit of fiscal responsibility (i.e., tied to inventory and payroll management) can the pharmacies pull + margins. Therefore I can highly refute your assertion that Target is pulling out of the retail business. The pharmacy operations are also one of the top 3 focuses for the company as a whole in 2013.

I also do not think the future of retail pharmacy is bleak to say the least. With obamacare on the horizon, the number of prescriptions being filled is definitely only going to be on the rise. Prescription margins may not be where they once were, but money is definitely still being made in the retail setting. And since I've started with Target I have only had 5-6% increases in annual salary so it has been very fiscally rewarding as well. I would highly encouraging working for Target or any other retail chain as long as you go in with a winning attitude.

What about a grocery store like Kroger or Dillons?
