What do you all think of the AAMC tests' VR sections?

I've done well on all the ones I've taken -- AAMC 7 (10 VR), 8 (12 VR), and 7 (10 VR), but Kaplan VR was consistently a 9 (except for one where I got a 12). On the other hand, I've gotten anywhere from 7-10 on EK. Being as I am doing well on the AAMC's VR is that all I should worry about? Is AAMC VR representative of the current test?

My test is in just a few days (5/26) so if my VR is good as-is, I figure beefing my sciences up a bit is my best bet for quick improvement, since they are already strong but BS was a little inconsistent. (I've gotten 13-14 on every PS section for all Kaplan and AAMC tests but gotten 2 11s over the past 3 AAMC and 5 Kaplan exams; the rest were all 13s on BS.)

Those are great scores! I'm actually having the opposite problem - I did great on EK/Kaplan verbal, but I'm doing HORRIBLE on AAMC verbals. I'm not sure why or what I'm doing wrong!

As far as your inconsistency in BS, sometimes it happens every now and then. Don't be too worried about that, but understand why you made those 11 vs the 13s. The questions that you got wrong, were they silly mistakes or things you didn't know?

Since there are only 52 questions per section, they can't possibly ask you EVERYTHING that you study for..so sometimes exams will get you at your weak areas and some will get you at your strong areas. Either way, it seems like you're doing great - keep up the hard work, and don't lose focus! Just a few more days... =)

Thanks!

I don't know what to tell you on AAMC vs. Kap, EK & TPR. For me, it just sort of makes sense. I feel like I don't always agree with the way the test prep companies make their choices. Sometimes, I don't think I see eye to eye w/ them! For where you are.... I have no clue what to suggest other than just doing more AAMCs. In my case, I'm wondering if it's safe to ONLY do the AAMCs or if that will be insufficient prep.

Anyone have any thoughts? I scored an 11 on AAMC 9 today. I will do the official guide tomorrow and AAMC 10 on Monday and then review Tues, rest Wed, test Thurs afternoon!

Anybody have any thoughts RE the original question? Is the current MCAT VR more similar to the AAMC tests' VR than to EK/TPR?

I had a very similar experience in that my AAMC FL scores were routinely 11 (all between 10-12) and my EK101 scores (test 7,8,9,10) were always lower (7-10).

I came to the conclusion that the EK tests were hurting me more than helping me. I figure if I need to retake the MCAT, I can use the last 4 to refresh.

i literally just signed on to post this EXACT question!

i am doing better on the AAMC VR passages than i am on EK or PR. i think the EK and PR are also so different from each other! the PR is so detail-oriented (passage hunting) while EK loves main idea/interpreting quotes.

i also agree with you 100% that some of the EK answer choices/reasoning are just so far fetched and illogical. i feel like i get at least 1-2 of those on every full length.

The AAMC mcat tests are the gold standard for verbal.

However, the EK101 Verbal passages are KEYYYYY!!!

Your verbal on the day of your test will feel longer, but trust that it's not. The EK verbal series will help you with stamina. I would highly recommend that you don't skip out on EK101. This goes for those people stuck at 8 or 9. You can get a 2-3 point increase if you thoroughly go over your EK101 tests.

While I agree that some of the answers from the prep companies, I don't agree with. In general, the MCAT might have questions that you don't agree with. However, you have to think like the guy (or girl) who is writing the question. What are they asking me? If you think like they think, then it's all cake, and Marie Antoinette can shove it.

But would it be wise to do so within the last week before my exam? Continuing EK would get me in EK's mindset, right? I want to remain in the AAMC's. It seems that my performance on the AAMC VR is consistent. I got an 11 on AAMC 9 today, so 3 10s, an 11 and a 12 on AAMC VR. Seems consistent to me -- just so long as the real MCAT VR is most like the AAMC practice tests' VR.

I've gone through the entire EK set, and I averaged around 9/10, with my lowest score being 7. On the AAMC verbal, I cannot manage to get over a 6! In this situation, I do not know what to do! I'm not sure how much EK is helping me...
