Well, I am near the middle of my chemistry course that I am taking in the SUMMER. The avg. on our first test was a 73. I made a 66. Me and my chemistry professor both agree that I do not understand the "concepts behind the calculations", and we also both agree that if I want to go to dental school, that I should drop with a W. He said that I would easily pass if I decided to stick with it, but I would not get anything higher than a C. ...........If I want to go to dental school (which I do so very much), I AM GOING TO DROP WITH A W.

So, it was my first course that I've taken at the university, and I blew my chances on getting atleast a B. Chemistry 1 is a pre-req, so I am dropping the class tomorrow, along with the lab. (lab was easy, but I am obligated to drop both)

I need some advice guys. I am going to NEVER take any summer classes again. BIG mistake on my part, especially jumping into chemistry in the summer. 😡

How many hours should I take starting this fall semester, ( KEEP IN MIND THAT I AM GOING TO TAKE CHEMISTRY 1 THIS FALL, AND DO BETTER AT IT.)????? Also, would dental schools frown if I were to only take Chem1, Trigonometry, and Zoology in this coming fall semester? That will only be 11 hours. How may hours do I need to take per semester, so that dental schools will not "frown upon" me???

Thank you, please give me all the advice you can! Be honest, because I can't feel too much worse than I do right now.

You want advice? Surf less, study more.

It's that simple.

You scored a 66? How many exams do you have left? Even if you have one left, you receive a 100, your average is still in the B range. So how is that you can't score over a C?

Dropping is not a bad thing, just as long as you retake with a B or higher. In order for dental schools to be not frown upon you, take a minimum of 12 hours per semester with as many sciences as you can handle. Do this strategically b/c you do not want any more "W"s on the transcripts.

Last semester I took Chem1 and instead of dropping it, I got a "D". However, I just retook it this semester (4week class) and got an "A". Just study hard and you can get through it.

When taking your classes, be fearless on the number of hours you take, but be careful with the courses you choose to take together. In addition, keep in mind that the 1st and 2nd year of D school has an approximation of 20-28 hrs per semester. You want them to know that you can handle something like that!

If I was in ur position I would take those 3 classes that you've mention Chem 1, Trigonometry and Zoology but I think I would also add some art class or maybe music class, or some lower division classes too that I think is an easy A.

Remember that you need to understand chemistry by heart and if even you don't like it you have to like it because you still need to know this for DAT. Chemistry will always be a foundation for other upper division courses. Make sure you have a very good foundation with Chemistry. If you are not confident to get an A in Chemistry or atleast a B. I wouldn't mind taking an introductory Chemistry course.

Maybe here's a thought to give you motivation: Always think that every course or anything you do in life will be your last chance so you have to give the best of your everything...studying ability. So one you'll look back at yourself and would not regret and tell yourself that I did my best.

Don't worry about ur W...it's just ur first...other's even get F's but still get into dentistry.

if it makes you feel any better, i had to drop gchem1 my first time taking it. Just be prepared to listen better and study harder and youll do fine! I went in with a different attitude towards school and my grades have been great ever since

You might want to look into taking a remedial chemistry class. this will help with building the concepts you need to be successful in chemistry.
Dental school wont look down upon this since you are trying to improve yourself by all means necessary. it sure looks better than having a W or F or a D in a class.

Would the professor allow you to drop and then audit the class? In my mind (as someone who took chem 1 in the summer and is in orgo 2 summer right now) it would be difficult to overemphasize the importance of gen chem. As it was stated earlier, you could still get a B in the class, but you're going to have to learn to study. I know that sounds harsh, but it's really wise advice. Gen Chem 2, and orgo 1 and 2 are pre reqs as well, and they are more difficult. Get a tutor, and if you decide that you must drop-ask to audit and then soak up as much info as possible so you can breeze through the retake.
