I got a W in physics this semester and I am concerned as to how that would look. Its my first W. Quite honestly the whole class withdrew except for about 4 students and the chair observed the prof and even said that he was not competent so he opened up a physics I section for the spring semester (which they normally dont do), fired the prof but wouldnt take off the Ws from our transcripts.
And Ive taken 5 other sciences so far including orgo 1 and theyre mostly B+s and a couple of solid As. I know I can fix that by taking upper level bio classes and getting As in them but as of now I dont know know what to do with this W.
Im pretty solid with the ECs though.

It looks worse than an A, better than a C, I guess? Just a placeholder for now really. Won't matter by the time you graduate, if ever.

Assuming you do well when you retake it this spring, of course. Which is what you should "do" about the W.

There's nothing really you can do - the W will be part of your transcript moving forward. However, I wouldn't dread it. Continue to do well in all future classes and when you retake Physics I, and this should only be a minor blemish that in all likelihood won't be brought up during an interview. If it is, you can always explain the circumstances and point to your academic record as a whole as being representative of your true cognitive ability. Hope this helps.

CALM DOWN. theres nothing to do- just move on. be happy that your GPA wasn't negatively affected. most people like to blame professors for bad grades- but this situation looks pretty legit, as in (if you were asked in an interview) you could easily explain it away.

Questions:

Are you taking the second sequence of physics next semester/taking the first one/taking both at the same time?

Whats your science GPA like up to this point?

Most people are lazy, few people work hard = the explanation for why many of you withdrew and a few of you stayed. Poor teacher or not, you are in control of how much work you do and how much you learn. Period. W isn't going anywhere. Get an A the next time.

ehh..
poor professors can't present info well, and some people are not the type of person who learn on there own, esp for a difficult course which can lead to a lack of motivation - leads to failing grade. esp physics...

agreed. especially if the professor was fired after that semester.....

They will ask you about your W. It is noticeable.

As an example, I had a W on my application. Stupid me, I forgot that I was enrolled in microbiology lab until midway through the semester - I had to withdraw from it. I was honest with the admissions staff/interviewers and they were ok with it.

In hindsight, I really have no idea how I overlooked it. But at my undergrad, we would sign up for classes and drop classes at a particular day. It was a well known strategy to sign up for more than we were willing to take to take up a portion of our schedule while we saved the spots for our friends. I guess I forgot to let one go.

Either way, they will notice your W.

Eh, I had 4 W's my first semester due to some financial issues. I retook all those classes and got As in them. Don't worry about one W, just be sure to do well when you retake it.

I had one W in Calculus in my first semester of college and I haven't been asked about it.

sgpa: 3.53
and yes I am taking physics next semester

Thanks for the advice everyone!

I hope you enjoy that Caribbean sun...

Come on, son. Nothing to worry about. One "W" won't keep you from med school.
