W. Indies?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Of coarse bud,

Its a full blown medical school like any medical school in the States. But you have to remember their curriculum is not geared towards the Steps.

It's not a offshore medical school with majority American citizen/permanent residents or Canadians medical students.

Hope that helps.

Thanks.

MDPWR.

Hey, I'm a bit of a lurker but I go to UWI. There's nothing stopping you from coming but just know that it's 5 years of school here. And like he said it's training people to work in the Caribbean so no one cares about the USMLE. People do it sometimes but that's on their own time.

Btw, Barbados and Bahamas are only available for clinicals. Pre-clin is only done in Jamaica or Trinidad.

Aww man that sucks. I was looking to go there because of reduced tuition. Good to know.

So even though W. Indies has approval we dont consider it b/c of the steps? But the curriculum, faculty, etc. must be in accord with CA somehow, so why would it be approved but the school does not prepare them for boards and licensure? Is it even the same path for and IMG, so graduates from that school are passing a different way?

What we mean is that UWI is not geared specifically toward preparation for the USMLE. You have to understand that this is a school geared toward people who want to practice in the Caribbean. Unlike med schools like SGU, Ross, etc.., the curriculum is not designed for those who want to go back to the US. Sure, a graduate from UWI could become a resident in the US. But they have to prepare for the USMLE on their own, because UWI's curriculum is not geared toward USMLE preparation.

Even if the school is not geard towards the steps the best thing is to apply somewhere else. What if we find we can not get in the Big 4 either? There are prep classes that prepares us for the USMLE? Why would it be CA approved but does not care if we are prepared to pass the steps? That sounds like all High School students need to take the SAT to get into college but the school we went to does not prepare us for college...
The school is accredited just like all U.S. schools are accredited it does not really matter as long as we get a degree from there. Would that mean preparing for the steps and obtaining a residency is all on the student? That sounds irresponsible on someone's part.

The other thing to consider aside from USMLE prep is that admission to UWI is very competitive as they give priorities to local Caribbean students. I know some alums of UWI in good residency programs but they have to prepare for at least a year to hurdle all the steps.
