So, about half a year ago, I decided to drop OChem II and take it the following summer instead of during Spring Semester. I did this, and I got a much better grade taking OChem over the summer than I would've if I'd stayed in it during the Spring. Recently, though, I noticed that, even though I clicked "Drop Class", it's showing as "W." I asked a few people, and I'm still not entirely clear on what it means. Does this look bad on a transcript? I've talked to the grade office and I'm not sure if I can get it removed :O

Thank you for any input.

Usually a W (withdrawal) indicates that a student was enrolled in a class for some meaningful length of time while the class was active and then dropped it. If this was the case, having a single W on your transcript will not affect you. If this was not the case, and you enrolled in the class but then dropped it from your schedule before the semester/quarter started, then you should contact your school's registrar and explain what happened. Schools have varying policies on W's/drops, so if you were enrolled in the class and it had begun some short period of time (a couple days-a week) before you dropped it, you may or may not have received a W, per your school's policy.

I have a "W" for a graduate course that I decided to take at a different time. I made the change in schedule four months before the class was even supposed to start. This is something that I need to ask my university about since I dropped the class to reschedule it the next semester way before the class started.

When in doubt, call your school. 🙂

I'd echo the above advice and say pester the school about it.

/got into med school with a W on my transcript.
//of course that W was my middle initial. :meanie:

Find out what your school* AND universities drop policy is. For example, at my undergrad students could drop courses through the 2nd week (of a 10 week quarter) via the student portal, and could drop courses with the professor's signature through the 6th week, both without a W. However, some schools restricted the ability to drop after the 2nd week in their courses.

*Example: University: University of California, Irvine.

School: School of Social Science. School of Biological Sciecnes. School of Physcial Sciences, etc

Doesn't a W normally mean that you dropped a class after the add/drop deadline? I thought normally Ws indicate that you were about to fail but decided to withdraw instead. I'd definitely try to get that removed if you're not supposed to have it.

If you withdraw when your about to fail i think it would be listed WF on the transcript "withdrawal fail"

A "W" is simply you dropped the class after the withdrawal date where you won't receive a W

Different schools have different policies. My school gives a 2 week add period, 3-4 week drop w/o record or to switch to P/F, and a until-last-day-of-classes period to drop with a W. After that, you get what you get.

Not even important! One W is not a big thing. If you have a ton obviously that would raise some eyebrows. I have a whole semester of W's due to overloading myself between work, school and family. Life happens!!

I would say don't sweat it but inquire if it bothers you.

Agreed 👍

Not a big deal, I had 2 W's on my transcript and nothing was ever even mentioned of it. Naturally, having a bunch of them will cause questions though.

If you dropped your class during regular add/drop and it still showed up as W, I'd talk to your school's administrator, since that's a system glitch.
