W or D/F on transcript???

hey guys....im having a quite a bit of trouble in genetics and I dont know what to do.....what would look better on a transcript, a D/F or a W (withdrawal)? If i withdraw, then it would really mess up my financial aid (lose scholarship and loan). Last day to withdraw is this friday without any refund at all....what do you guys think i should do?

Well, from a logical perspective, a W always looks better than a D/F. A person with a W was not necessarily failing that class. Whereas a D/F means you did pretty bad at that class.

I agree that W probably looks better...from a GPA standpoint, I got a D, C, and C+ my freshman year, the rest A's and B's to this point, and it completely devistated my GPA and makes you work your way out of a deep hole. Im not sure what a W does to your GPA but if it doesnt affect it and a D or F is iminent than might as well drop. If you dont drop and get a D or F you really dont get passing credit for it and it kills the GPA, lose lose situation.

take the D......wait, isn't the semester only half-way over? there is definitely time to bring your grade up. by the way, i have 2 D's on my transcript...retaken and got A's (my overall GPA is over a 3.6, too) and wasn't questioned about it during my interview. it is my opinion that W's look like you gave up. strictly my opinion though.

A different perspective, not necessarily invalid. Also, it's true that many profs boost your grade up if you do well in your finals, even if other grades pull your overall average way down.

It boils down to whatever decision you feel most comfortable with.

If there's anyway you can raise your grade to a C (doesn't seem like it's too late yet!), definitely stick with it. I had quite a few C's, but during my interviews I had 2 different interviewers say they were impressed with me for sticking out some tough courses rather than taking the W. They said they hate to see W's because it shows you quit when the going gets tough rather than buckling down and working to stick it out.

Its a good opinion if there is a possibility of bringing the grade up. If a D or F is unavoidable Id rather have a W than a D/F, unless your GPA is high enough that it can take that hit.

I had a D and a D- my freshman year (in Sociology and History, I know I'm a *****). I also took a W in Botany as a sophomore. I got into three dental schools with no problem, two of which were my top choices (Case and Michigan.....Indiana was the other). Get your foot in the door with a decent DAT score and GPA and then you'll have plenty of opportunities to explain yourself at the interviews. I also used my personal statement essay to explain myself a little. There's my input, take it for what it's worth.

Would one get defered from school getting a D in pre-requisite or other classes? like English?

If your schools are the same as mine, there are W's and UW's. The only way you can get a W (official withdrawal) is if the school gives you permission to withdraw. If you simply stopped going to class and stopped completing assignments/tests you will receive a UW (unofficial withdrawal).

According to your AADSAS GPA a W does nothing to your GPA, it doesn't effect it in any way. An UW is considered the same as a fail. I have both on my transcript.

I was half way through the semester and needed to withdraw due to medical reasons, and the only way my school would allow a W is if I provided letters from both doctors and surgens stating that my injuries kept me from going to school.

I have been told that if you have a W, dental schools cannot officially interperate it as anything other than a withdrawal. It could be due to a draft to the war, or serious life threatening sickness/injury. If your school sanctions it, dental schools will not question it. That is also what I have experienced thus far in my interviews as well.

Has anyone got an interview to UoP with Ws or any Ds on their transcripts?? On their website, they say that applicants aren't considered if they have Ds or any Ws. That's good to know since I applied there and have a couple Ws.
