I just got a "W" for a bulls**t history class that I needed to fulfill graduation requirements....and it wasn't even my fault.

This is where it started....

Instead of taking the course on campus, I was approved to take the class at a local community college. So..... I log onto my student account to try and drop the damn class for the summer session in which i was registered. (The deadline to drop was friday 11:59pm)

The stupid system keeps saying that i dropped the class, but when i log back on, it says i'm still in it....it's friday 6pm and the school offices are closed. No problem right? I'll just leave a message on the dean's voicemail and send a few emails 👎

I get a reply today that says...."sorry, you've passed the deadline for dropping a class so you're getting the 'W' "

I didn't even attend a single lecture.

How the hell do I explain this on my applications...I don't want to waste valuable space on my PS to explain this bs.

😡 😡 😡

Nobody on the adcoms will care about 1 W on your transcript. That being said, this situation does sound like something you might have luck fixing if you file an appeal.

You don't explain it on your applications...it was a stupid class/mix-up...

I had a similar "W" and no one ever asked about it. Focus on the positive!!

thanks.....puts my mind to ease. Can schools put a note on transcripts explaining the mixup? or are transcripts finalized ?

I also had a W and was never asked about it. I had to withdraw for health reasons, but I didn't waste my time talking about it.

I had 10 W's on my transcript. I didn't mention it on my AMCAS/personal essay. I wasn't asked about it in my interview, but when I was asked if there was anything I wanted to discuss about my transcripts/MCAT/activities, I brought it up. My interview did say that he had wondered about it. I don't know why he didn't bring it up.

Yeah, I'm looking at 5 Withdrawls on my transcript and I'm still trying to figure out what to do about it. If it were just one I would let it be and not mention it anywhere, except maybe in an interview. I'm guessing most people have 1, especially if you're coming from a school like mine that includes any class dropped after 2 weeks in the term as a W.

I'm sorry, but how did you have 10 W's?? 😕

I was in the same situation, instead of having 10 W's, I had 50, and I still got in! Wow, it must be because I am amazingly good looking (give the Magnum)

You can read minds??

Hopefully W's aren't that major of a deal anyway. I mean I have like 3....two of which are from freshman year..one was a WF in a German class which was complete crap but I mean my school always made like it is kind of an invisible thing that should never be taken into account. Are withdraws really THAT serious?

I think you should go and clear it up, explaining what happened. I think you could get them to clear it. It's a W you didn't come close to deserving, i would try to fix it because it is the principle of the matter. If you can't I'm sure it won't hurt you.

I had to withdraw from physio at a community college because I had a time conflict with a class I needed to take at my reg college. I was asked about it only once. It's no big deal as long as you have a good reason.

I'm surprised by these responses...no one has brought up that he waited until 1 minute before the deadline to drop it. I don't exactly think it's "not your fault" but, whatever, W's aren't that big of a deal.

Umm.... no he didn't.

Derr my bad..I misread the 11:59 thing. Still, aside from the "stupid system keeps saying that i dropped the class" part, this smells of "I waited too long to drop the class". Anyway, it happens.

yea i actually got approved to take the class at the cc on friday morning.....i went to work and came home and tried to drop it (almost 6 hours before the deadline)

another advisor gave me the same "sorry its your fault....W" speech today.

I'm going in on thursday to talk to a dean....in any case, i'm starting to think it won't matter if I have to take the W.

I would fight this to the death. "It's not my fault, I executed the command to withdraw before the deadline and it did not work, so it is the system's fault that I have a W. That is not fair."
